And hour and 53 minutes that took for Zvonareva, despite a whopping 60 unforced errors from Kanepi. And next up for her will be the winner between top seed Caroline Wozniacki and unseeded Dominika Cibulkova, who play not before midnight (UK time) tonight

WINNER! Zvonareva is through to the semi-finals of the US Open after Kanepi sends a backhand long (and probably slightly wide) across court
5-6
A break point goes begging for Kanepi when she mis-hits another backhand after the ball gets held up by the wind once again. And Zvonareva goes on to hold when another Kanepi forehand goes long of the baseline. The Estonian will have to serve to stay in the set for a second time after teh change of ends
5-5
A very impressive hold from Kanepi, the first of the match where she hasn't struggled even in the slightest. The Estonian levels up once again to 15 when Zvonareva sends a forehand long down the centre of the court and we're back on serve with Kanepi bouncing very confidently around the baseline
4-5
Zvonareva picks her level up once again holding to 15 with a series of fearsome forehands that eventually Kanepi cannot deal with. And the Estonian ends up hitting a forehand into the net to leave herself staring at the prospect of serving to stay in this match after the change of ends
4-4
Kanepi sends another shocking backhand long of the long of the baseline to hand Zvonareva another break point. The Russian wastes it with a forehand long of her own after the ball was held up by the wind again and she ended up reaching forward for it. And Kanepi goes on to hold with a cracking backhand down the line that she lands right on the line. That's the first time Kanepi has held since the seventh game of the first set and it gets things back on level terms in this second set

BREAK! Hello, hello. A second double fault of the match from Zvonareva, accompanied by a little squeal, and Kanepi has two break back points. The first goes begging after a very lengthy rally when Kanepi sends a backhand long down the line, as does the second when the Estonian sends a forehand long. Zvonareva hands Kanepi a third chance though and this time she gets it when a Russian forehand catches the top of the tape and bounces back on to her own side of the net

BREAK! Kanepi squanders a first game point with a forehand long of the baseline while the wind conspires against her on the second as Zvonareva's forehand stops dead and Kanepi doesn't have enough time to get to it. And a cross court forehand wide hands the Russian a break point. Which she takes with another woeful forehand error from the Estonian. This match is Zvonareva's for the taking now. Mind you, Kanepi was a set and 4-2 down against Wickmayer in the previous round as well
2-3
HOLD! WE HAVE A HOLD! Kanepi denies Zvonareva on a first game point with an emphatic forehand smash winner into the corner but finally we have a hold, the first in six games, when the Russian wrong-foots a Kanepi on the baseline and the Estonian hits an over-stretched forehand into the net
2-2

BREAK! Kanepi saves a break point with a solid forehand across court that Zvonareva cannot get back over the net but the Russian gets a second chance just a couple of points later when Kanepi hits a backhand into the net afetr a lengthy rally. Again the chance goes begging when Zvonareva sends a forehand long, although she sets up a third chance with a forehand smash winner. A backhand long squanders it again but she finally gets it at the fourth attempt when Kanepi hits a forehand into the net
2-1

BREAK! Zvonareva is just about keeping herself under control at the moment, despite being a set ahead. But she sends a forehand long of the baseline to hand Kanepi another break point. And the Estonian does take the lead once again when the wind gets underneath an angled backhand across court from Zvonareva and the ball drifts just wide
1-1

BREAK! Ouch. Kanepi immediately squanders her advantage with a shockingly poor game and hands Zvonareva a break back to love when she slaps another forehand long of the baseline. She stands tall on that backhand but sometimes leans back slightly and almost without fail when she does that, the ball drops long
1-0

BREAK! Not a great start to the second set from Zvonareva as she dumps a backhand into the net to concede an early break in this second set. The sometimes temperamental Russian let herself get worked up about a call in the very first point of the game which she was ordered to replay and failed to recover herself for the rest of the game

The winner of this match will face the winner of tonight's first match between top seed, and last year's runner-up Caroline Wozniacki and unseeded Slovak Dominika Cibulkova. The smart money will be on the Dane to come through that clash. Certainly Patrick Mouratoglou believes that Wozniacki can come through. In fact he believes she can win the whole tournament.

SET! And this time Zvonareva does grab the set when Kanepi moves forward to a forehand and dumps a forehand into the net
40-Ad
A chopped defensive backhand from Zvonareva catches the wind and drifts across court before dipping down into the corner and it brings up three SET points. The first goes begging when Kanepi finds an inside out cross court winner, and the second is saved by the Estonian with some huge hitting with a backhand down the line that the Russian cannot cope with. And Zvonareva hits into the net on the third but double fault number six from Kanepi hands Zvonareva a fourth chance ...
3-5
Kanepi will have to serve to stay in the set next as Zvonareva holds when the Estonian drills a forehand long of the baseline. She's furious with herself, especially after a forehand into the net on the point before, which pushed her to bounce her racquet off the floor in a bid to get rid of some of her aggression
3-4
Kanepi gets through a really tough service, recovering from 0-40 down to go on and hold when Zvonareva sends two backhands long of the baseline on consecutive points
2-4
Zvonareva is dealing with the conditions considerable better than Kanepi at this stage as she races through a hold to 15 to consolidate the break this time. But the Estonian will be the first to admit that she is a slow-starter, see her bagel first set against Wickmayer for proof if you need it, and there's time yet to work her way into this match
2-3

BREAK! Zvonareva comes up with a scintilating backhand down the line, off a high looping ball, that Kanepi cannot deal with and it brings up another two break points. And sure enough, Zvonareva does take the lead once again when the Estonian sends a forehand long of the baseline
