GAME, SET & MATCH - PENNETTA 4-6 6-4 6-3 - Angelique Kerber drops to her knees after winning one of the most error-strewn matches you are likely to see. It wasn't pretty, but she's through and will now play Sam Stosur in the semi-finals.
-
PENNETTA 4-6 6-4 5-3 - Finally, a consolidated break!! The game was an absolute marathon. They both had chances to take it, but couldn't quite get there. Pennetta sent a smash long mid-court on game point. Is that it??
-
BREAK - PENNETTA 4-6 6-4 4-3 - Pennetta is looking up to the gods. And then to her coaching staff. It all looked so promising for her at the start of this set but it now looks bleak. She takes a 30-0 lead but then completely throws it all away, conceding the next four points.
-
PENNETTA 4-6 6-4 3-3 - YES!!!! We have a hold of serve people. It was a pretty decent one too. She served superbly and held to 15.
-
BREAK - PENNETTA 4-6 6-4 3-2 - No, no she cannot. The 26th seed Italian again completely crumbles when serving and concedes it to 15. Should we have expected anything less?
-
BREAK - PENNETTA 4-6 6-4 3-1 - We have another break of serve. It seems that when the pressure is on, Pennetta's game goes up a few notches but when she looks to be cruising, she forgets how to serve. Let's see if she can hold it together...
-
BREAK - PENNETTA 4-6 6-4 2-1 - What is going on?!?! Pennetta looks to be running away with the match when up 30-0 and then 40-30 but thows it away and is broken following some very average forehands.
-
BREAK - PENNETTA 4-6 6-4 2-0 - Kerber seems to have completely lost her rhythm and now looks in danger of letting this second set run away from her. She faces a number of break points and is finally broken after a number of deuces.
-
PENNETTA 4-6 6-4 1-0 - Pennetta looks to be in total control now. She races into a 40-15 lead, flying through her service game. Kerber misses a forehand to give her the game.
-
SET - PENNETTA 4-6 6-4 - Kerber tightens up under the pressure and goes down 15-40. The first set point is saved when the Italian nets. The second disappears too, as the German hits a forehand winner. The 26th seed fights back and crafts another set point, which she takes. We'll have a deciding set.
-
PENNETTA 4-6 5-4 - Pennetta races to 40-15 courtesy of a number of sweetly struck forehands. The German has a chance of getting back into the game with a cross-court forehand winner but is stopped in her tracks when the Italian hits a winner with a swinging forehand volley.
-
BREAK - PENNETTA 4-6 4-4 - Kerber is instantly down 0-40 with two sloppy errors and a double fault! She then sends a backhand long to hand her opponent the break-back. To love!!
-
PENNETTA 4-6 3-4 - The Italian seems to be showing no signs of that niggle she's obviously carrying. She holds to love with some pinpoint serves.
-
PENNETTA 4-6 2-4 - Finally. Kerber holds her serve. And it was quite easy if I am honest. Pennetta has started moving awkwardly on court and is taking a little time before her service game. She could be struggling a bit here...
-
BREAK - PENNETTA 4-6 2-3 - I'm not even surprised anymore. The 26th seed just throws away her service game, yet again. Can the unseeded German now take advantage of the gift she has been given and hold her serve? I would not put my money on it...
-
BREAK - PENNETTA 4-6 2-2 - This is bizarre stuff. Kerber has had two real chances to consolidate the break and effectively win this match. She again falls to pieces and is broken with relative ease.
-
BREAK - PENNETTA 4-6 1-2 - Shocking service game again from Pennetta. She just cannot hold serve at the minute and is now down a set and a break.
-
BREAK - PENNETTA 4-6 1-1 - Pennetta looks a better player when receiving serve. She too, isn't doing a great deal off the return but is managing to stay in the rally and then put the ball away for a winner when the opportunity presents itself. She breaks to 30.
-
BREAK - PENNETTA 4-6 0-1 - Pennetta still continues to struggle on her serve. Kerber is reading it will at the moment but isn't really punishing as she should do - it's just the Italian who is making too many errors. Kerber gets the break when the 26th seed nets. All she needs to do now is hold serve and she'll be in the semi's/ Easier said than done, though...
-
SET - PENNETTA 4-6 - The two enter a lengthy rally on the opening point and it is ended when Pennetta pulls her forehand wide. The Italian then makes two more errors on the return to gift the German two set points. The first is taken with an excellent cross-court backhand pass.
