Makarova 6-7(2) 6-4 1-6 Mladenovic. Game, set and match! There it is! Mladenovic records her first victory over Makarova and reaches her first Grand Slam quarter-final in the process, breaking the Russian for the third time in this final set to seal the win. An ace sees Makarova go 30-love up in the game before back-to-back forehand winners from the Frenchwoman peg Makarova back. It's also a forehand winner than brings up match point for Mladenovic a couple of points later but she seals it with a backhand winner to set up a last eight clash against Roberta Vinci, a walkover victor over Eugenie Bouchard earlier in the day.
Makarova 6-7(2) 6-4 1-5 Mladenovic. No signs of nerves as yet from Mladenovic as she holds to 15 with a crunching forehand winner down the line to leave Makarova serving to stay in this match. Surely the Frenchwoman will want to finish it here rather than having to serve for it though!
Makarova 6-7(2) 6-4 1-4 Mladenovic. There's a big cheer that goes up around Arthur Ashe as Makarova recovers from 0-30 down to finally get a game on the board in this final set. The Russian produces an ace to bring up game point before drawing the error from Mladenovic to seal the game.
Makarova 6-7(2) 6-4 0-4 Mladenovic. The Frenchwoman, who has never previously been past the third round of the US Open before, posts another comfortable service hold to cement the double break and leave herself potentially just two games away from a place in the last eight. It's all about the Makarova errors at the moment, though, with Mladenovic almost only having to get the ball in play to win a point.

Makarova 6-7(2) 6-4 0-3 Mladenovic. Break. Makarova is falling apart at the seams now as she throws in another poor service game to go a double break down. Her 20th unforced error costs her the game, this time off her backhand wing, and she's going to have to work very hard from here if she is to replicate her run to the semi-finals from last year.
Makarova 6-7(2) 6-4 0-2 Mladenovic. The Frenchwoman seems to have wrestled all the momentum from Makarova again now as she crunches a forehand winner over the net to hold for the loss of one point and consolidate her early break in this third set.

Makarova 6-7(2) 6-4 0-1 Mladenovic. Break. Just when it looked like Makarova had this match sorted, sealing the second set with a break and with a history of recovering from a set down to beat Mladenovic, she goes and throws in a poor game like this one. The Russian is broken, albeit from deuce, with a series of poor unforced errors including a double fault.

Makarova 6-7(2) 6-4 Mladenovic. Set. Oh, wow. Mladenovic opens with a double fault before being broken to love to concede this second set. Consecutive backhand winners from Makarova help the Russian to seal the game and take all the momentum into the final set.
Makarova 6-7(2) 5-4 Mladenovic. Another love service game from Makarova leaves Mladenovic with the pressure of serving to stay in this second set. She is potentially just a few games away from moving into the quarter-finals of the US Open. Or she could be one game away from being taken to a third set. Doncha just love tennis?!
Makarova 6-7(2) 4-4 Mladenovic. Mladenovic enjoys her easiest service game of the second set so far as she levels up with a hold to 15 when Makarova fails to find the court with a routine forehand. This set is reaching crunch point now, who will blink first?
Makarova 6-7(2) 4-3 Mladenovic. A double fault and a netted backhand volley from Makarova to open the game sees the Russian put more pressure on herself than she needs to at 0-30 down. But she doesn't drop another point from there and goes on to hold with a forehand volley winner to make amends.
Makarova 6-7(2) 3-3 Mladenovic. A couple of rasping forehand winners down the line at just the right point from Makarova help her peg Mladenovic back to deuce from 40-15 down as the Russian continues to press. Mladenovic stands firm on this occasion, though, finding a forehand winner of her own to seal the game at her fourth attempt.
Makarova 6-7(2) 3-2 Mladenovic. Makarova look to be hitting her stride on serve much better now as she eases through a love service hold this time around to stay ahead in this second set. The Russian look more comfortable at the moment than she did at any point in the opening set.
Makarova 6-7(2) 2-2 Mladenovic. Makarova races through a quick service hold to 15, sealing the game with an ace, before Mladenovic returns the favour, also dropping just one point on her service game, holding with a forehand winner.
Makarova 6-7(2) 1-1 Mladenovic. Another battling game for the Frenchwoman, who opens well with an ace and a forehand winner. But she is pegged back to deuce by Makarova before squandering a game point with a double fault. Mladenovic does well not to have to face a break point, however, and goes on to hold to level up early in this second set.
Makarova 6-7(2) 1-0 Mladnovic. A crunching backhand winner from the leftie sees her seal a fairly straightforward opening game to get this second set underway.

Makarova 6-7(2) Mladenovic. Set. Ouch. Makarova fails to find the court with a smash to go 0-2 down in the break. And it only gets worse from there for the Russian as she finds herself trailing 1-5 at the chance of ends. Makarova pegs one point back immediately after the change of ends but it's only a temporary relief as Mladenovic goes on to seal the set at the first attempt by drawing a backhand error from her opponent. Makarova has recovered from a set down to win in each of their previous encounters, though, so the Russian will no doubt not be panicking just yet.
Makarova 6-6 Mladenovic. A tie-break it is as Makarova also posts a comparatively simple service hold, this one for the loss of just the one point. Makarova seals the game with a backhand winner as Mladenovic prepares to open the breaker by serving first.
Makarova 5-6 Mladenovic. A comparatively simple, love service hold for Mladenovic sees her sneak ahead once again and ensures this opening set will end in a tie-break at worse for her. Makarova will have to serve to stay in this set for a second time.
Makarova 5-5 Mladenovic. A blistering forehand winner down the line comes at just the right time for Makarova as it denies Mladenovic on her first set point. The Frenchwoman is then denies on a second when she nets a forehand after a great point by Makarova, who holds to level up on the very next point with a backhand winner - just to prove she is firing off both wings now!
