That will be a huge disappointment for Venus Williams, but a match she can be proud of nonetheless.
Pliskova 4-6 6-4 7-6 Williams: Venus returns a clearly out ball to give Pliskova the winning point, but is somehow allowed to retrospectively challenge it. It's out, the umpire rules in her favour, but it's not enough and Pliskova wins anyway.
Pliskova 4-6 6-4 6-6 (5-2) Williams: The audacity of that last shot by Venus... She gets Pliskova exactly where she wants her and slams the ball to the far side of the net. You could see her casually stroll into it, no doubt what was coming. Superb.
Pliskova 4-6 6-4 6-6 Williams: Incredible stuff - Williams breaks back in the 11th hour and it will all come down to this tie-break. Who can keep their cool?
Pliskova 4-6 6-4 6-5 Williams: Venus Williams fights to the last to keep what must surely be one of her last grand slam dreams alive. As Pliskova looks like she will walk it, WIlliams takes back four match points in a row - can her experience win her this?
Pliskova 4-6 6-4 6-5 Williams: Just when you think it might all be over, there is yet another twist in the tale. A net ball rebounds over an unsuspecting Venus who's at the net ready to return it. It really is hard luck for her as Pliskova serves for the match.
Pliskova 4-6 6-4 5-5 Williams: It's gone to the wire here and Pliskova shrieks as she takes advantage fizzing the ball past Venus. Anything could happen here, it's just impossible to call.
A reminder of how Venus got here...
Pliskova 4-6 6-4 4-5 Williams: It's beyond tense now, with Pliskova's nerves looking to be getting the better of her it's all starting to unravel.
Pliskova 4-6 6-4 4-4 Williams: Well it's obvious who the Flushing Meadows crowd wants to win. Rapturous applause for Venus as she starts to fight back against a stressed looking Pliskova, and she breaks her with a hearty roar. That's going to give her the mental edge if nothing else.
Pliskova 4-6 6-4 4-3 Williams: Williams wallops an ace down the court to win the game with Pliskova not even getting so much as a point, but she really needs to break now to avoid the tie-break.
Pliskova 4-6 6-4 2-1 Williams: Was that the deciding moment of this match? Pliskova's just broken Venus' serve...
Pliskova 4-6 6-4 Williams: Oh Venus, perhaps a Williams v Williams double header wasn't to be, this year. Of course there's everything to play for in the final set, but Pliskova is definitely starting to look stronger.
Pliskova 4-6 4-3 Williams: Pliskova has taken the lead in the second set for the first time, and this could be tricky for Venus - you would probably give Pliskova the edge in terms of general fitness, even if Venus is looking strong.
Pliskova 4-6 1-3 Williams: And she's broken. What a way to do it, too. Venus signs out of the pacey rally between her and Pliskova by legging it up to the net to return a very tricky ball. It fizzes down the line and it's too good for Pliskova.
Pliskova 4-6 1-1 Williams: Pliskova might be settling into the game now, both players hold serve in the opening games of the second set but Pliskova is looking lively. She hits an absolute stinger down the tram lines and past Venus to take the second game.
Pliskova 4-6 Williams: That's more like it. Really aggressive play by Venus who almost walks the first set. Almost. If she'd maintained that lead I'd say this was over and done with, but psychologically Pliskova may be well back in the game, now.
Pliskova 4-5 Williams: Well this has turned quickly - Venus has just handed away a four-game lead. Again there with unforced errors, hitting the ball out then into the net to consolidate Pliskova's advantage.
