WILLIAMS 2-0 HALEP: BREAK! Serena gets the better of the opening exchange as Halep nets before swatting away a forehand drive volley winner. A stunning backhand up the line gives the favourite three break points but she hits a good Halep serve long. Another good delivery up the tee puts the Romanian in touch but she then hits wide and Williams has the immediate break.

WILLIAMS 1-0 HALEP: Serena nets a return on the opening point but then slams down an ace to make amends. Halep is unable to return another biggie but Serena then nets in another short rally. A second ace redresses the balance and a third wins the game. Wow!

Simona Halep has won the toss and chosen to receive… Is that a cop out? Doesn’t trust her own serve? A little nervous? Mary Pierce doesn’t like that choice. The other option is to differ. And that doesn’t happen too often.
