Top seed Karolina Pliskova was dumped out of the quarter-finals of the US Open by CoCo Vandeweghe, delighting her home crowd with a 7-6(4) 6-3 win.
The shock win for the 20th seed means there are so far three American women in the semi-finals, with Madison Keys possibly making it a full set of four later on Wednesday.
Venus Williams is playing Sloane Stephens in the last four and Vandeweghe will face Keys if her compatriot can beat Estonia's Kaia Kanepi - the first match scheduled for the night session at midnight.
Vandeweghe quickly earned the first break of the match to go 3-1 up but showed signs of frustration when she smashed her racket into the court after producing a double-fault allowing Pliskova to break back.
With the help of the home fans' huge support, the New York native took the first set in a tie-break that she dominated.
A frustrated looking Pliskova struggled to find her rhythm throughout the match, serving just two aces while committing three double faults.
The second set was closed out by Vandeweghe and she kept the possibility of an all-American women’s semi-finals alive.
After wrapping up the victory, Vandeweghe briefly fell to her knees before shaking hands with Pliskova and then walking over to her box to celebrate with her team.
"Even though we are out here individually, it's a team sport," she said in an on-court interview. "They work as hard as I do."
Pliskova's defeat also ensures that Spain's Garbine Muguruza will be world number one, up from three in the WTA rankings.
