GAME SET AND MATCH ROGER FEDERER! 6-3 6-1 6-3. The killer blow was landed in the preceding game, and Federer serves out the match with ease. Giraldo held his own in the third set but there was only going to be one winner. Federer goes through to the round of 16.

FEDERER 6-3 6-1 5-3 GIRALDO. What a point! It's 15-0 and Giraldo draws Federer to the net. Federer tries a lob-volley but Giraldo lobs him straight back. Federer gets it but is powerless to track down Giraldo's ensuing drop volley. At 30-15 Federer produces a majestic drop volley of his own then comes up with a fine backhand crosscourt winner for break point. The quality is this contest has ramped up a notch. Giraldo saves the break point with a big serve but another one comes around and he nets a simple in-out forehand. A devastating blow.
FEDERER 6-3 6-1 4-3 GIRALDO. What's this? Break point Giraldo?! That wasn't in the script! The excitement on Centre doesn't last long, though. Federer brutally shuts out the glimmer of hope with three straight unreturnable serves. Fun-sucker.
FEDERER 6-3 6-1 3-3 GIRALDO. Giraldo's hanging in there. The second set was a whitewash but the Colombian is making sure that doesn't happen again, moving swiftly to 40-15. Federer pegs him back to deuce but Giraldo gets enough behind his serve to stay on serve in this set.
FEDERER 6-3 6-1 3-2 GIRALDO. Federer is again untroubled on serve and we move steadily along in this third set. Is he biding his time, the Swiss, picking the right moment to break serve and put this one to bed?
FEDERER 6-3 6-1 2-2 GIRALDO. Poor Santi Giraldo. He's looking demoralised now at 30-40 as he has to face a break point. Is he about to lie down? No he's not! He comes back to win three straight points, sealing his hold with sucessive backhand winners - one down the line, the next crosscourt. Lovely stuff.
FEDERER 6-3 6-1 2-1 GIRALDO. Three games so far in this third set and three comfortable holds. Federer edges ahead.
FEDERER 6-3 6-1 1-1 GIRALDO. The Colombian isn't treating this as a procession, motoring his way to 40-0. He double faults but then Federer nets and that's his most comfortable hold of the match.
FEDERER 6-3 6-1 1-0 GIRALDO. Federer is serving first in what could be a largely processional third set. That's certainly how it seems as Federer produces an effortless love service game, with big serves, volleys, half-volleys, and a forehand winner.

FEDERER 6-3 6-1 GIRALDO. Giraldo is serving to stay in the set and at 40-30 he misses a drop volley that lingers tantalisingly on the let chord before deciding to drop back on the Colombian's side of the net. It's harsh and Federer goes on to break his serve again and take what you'd say is an unassailable two sets lead.
FEDERER 6-3 5-1 GIRALDO. Uncharacteristic sloppiness from Federer takes us to 15-30 and allows Giraldo a mere sniff. That's all he's getting, though, as Federer is soon back to his serve-volleying best. 40-30 now and Giraldo can just about get his frame to Federer's serve but can't direct the ball anywhere near the court.
FEDERER 6-3 4-1 GIRALDO. That's better from Giraldo, who gets himself on the scoreboard in the second set and stems the flow of five straight Federer games. He draws Federer to the net and picks him off with a delightful crosscourt backhand passing shot. The damage has already been done, though, in this set.
FEDERER 6-3 4-0 GIRALDO. This is one way traffic. Federer is just casually flitting round the court, doing what he pleases with the ball and often coming to the net when he feels it's time for the kill. It's a comfortable hold for 4-0.

FEDERER 6-3 3-0 GIRALDO. Federer is really piling on the pressure now. If Giraldo can't find a first serve he can't get himself on top in these points. He serves an unreturnable at 0-30 but on the next point fires a bakchand well well wide. Federer gets a look at a second serve on the second break point, steps in and cruelly swats it away. Double break.
FEDERER 6-3 2-0 GIRALDO. Giraldo is made to do more running as Federer backs up his break. The Swiss dumps a volley in the net at 40-15 but a thunderous serve does the trick on the second game point.

FEDERER 6-3 1-0 GIRALDO. He's just lost the first set and he immediately goes a break down in the second. It's not looking good for Giraldo. Federer begins to dictate, getting his opponent scrambling around and forcing him into making errors. It's a break to love in the end and Federer tightens his grip on the match.

FEDERER 6-3 GIRALDO. More good serving from Federer as he aces at 15-0 and serve-volleys at 30-0. Three set points. Giraldo wrong-foots him and saves the first but there's more serve-volleying on the second and Federer seals the first set with a coolly taken forehand volley.
FEDERER 5-3 GIRALDO. The backhand is an area of weakness for Giraldo and he nets another one at 15-0. It's not enough to de-rail him, though, and he goes on to hold serve. Federer to serve for the set...
FEDERER 5-2 GIRALDO. Some fine serving ensures an easy love service game for Federer. Giraldo will now have to come out and serve to stay in the first set.
FEDERER 4-2 GIRALDO. Giraldo has 30-0 but Federer strides in and puts away a backhand volley before hitting a forehand crosscourt winner on the next point. Giraldo outs an inside out forehand way wide at 40-30 but Federer misses twice from deuce to hand the Colombian his second hold of the match.
