Ward did a decent job there, by my reckoning, and the crowd certainly agree. Nonetheless, he's the second Briton to leave the tournament already today. With Laura Robson playing Angelique Kerber later, we could well be looking at an opening day hat trick.

Djokovic 6-0 7-5 6-4 Ward: Ward doesn't help himself, making unforced errors but some great points there, too. He's moved around the court well but in two hours and three minutes, Novak Djokovic secures his passage to the second round of the tournament.

Djokovic 6-0 7-6 5-4 Ward: I'm not really sure why Djokovic hasn't ended this yet, but it's his serve for the match, now so I wouldn't expect much more.

Djokovic 6-0 7-6 5-3 Ward: Djokovic serves out to put himself one game away from winning the match, courtesy of a well placed dropshot well out of Ward's reach.
Djokovic 6-0 7-6 4-3 Ward: Nice service game from James Ward who closes the Djoker down in consecutive points. He's not going to win this game - he's two sets down and trailing in the third - but it's been more competitive than I'd have predicted.

Djokovic 6-0 7-6 3-2 Ward: A nail-biting game finally concludes as Djokovic throws away a number of opportunities to break his opponent's serve, but Ward defies expectation and holds. It's not over yet.

Over on Court No.1 Venues Williams is a set up to Donna Vekic and level on the second, by the way.

Djokovic 6-0 7-6 1-1 Ward: After holding his serve to open the set, Ward makes some careless errors, but the game concludes with a very competitive effort from Ward nearly breaking the World No.1, who comes back from his dropshot by the net with a blistering volley that Ward is powerless to get his racquet to.

Djokovic 6-0 7-6 Ward: Probably not the way Djokovic wanted to win the set, but he's done it nonetheless to extend his lead against James Ward, as if we expected anything different.

Djokovic 6-0 6-6 Ward: How quickly the tide can turn in a game of tennis we muse while sounding the tiebreak klaxon. The scoreline is... interesting.

Djokovic 6-0 6-5 Ward: Goodness, James Ward came perilously close to breaking Novak Djokovic's serve. I mean he didn't actually break it, but he had some chances there. Boris Becker looks on, steely eyed.

Djokovic 6-0 5-5 Ward: James Ward will not be beaten it seems, or broken perhaps. He levels with Djokovic again.

Over on Court No.1 - in case you're interested - eighth seed Venus Williams is in a tie-break with 19-year-old Croatian, Donna Vekic for the first set.

Djokovic 6-0 5-4 Ward: Ward is curiously moving further away from the baseline to open up further opportunities for Djokovic who, it's fair to say, doesn't really need them. 5-4 in the second set is a tremendous result for Ward, but it's not going to get much better with carelessness like that.

Djokovic 6-0 4-4 Ward: Djokovic is starting to look ever so slightly frustrated as Ward levels once again. Clearly, no one's talking about Djokovic losing this match, but it's worth noting he had some slightly dodgy performances at the French Open, not too long ago. Is the shine fading on the defending champ of every single Grand Slam? Um, no.

Djokovic 6-0 3-3 Ward: What? Ward levels with a hard fought return - a pretty decent dropshot. Back in the game? Well, back in the set at least.

Djokovic 6-0 3-2 Ward: Well we do love an underdog... A massive applause as the Brit takes his first AND SECOND games of the second set. I'm not going to talk about comebacks just yet, though.
