FEDERER 5-5 BERDYCH: Federer simply isn’t going to be broken two games on the trot. That just doesn’t happen. Really solid serving this time and the Fed express holds in express time with a love hold.

FEDERER 4-5 BERDYCH: Federer had been looking sublime but big credit to Berdych for hanging tough. He’s actually playing extremely well and seems to be using a tactic of hitting hard and up the middle, nullifying Federer’s chances of angled winners. He consolidates his break with an ace and a love hold.

FEDERER 4-4 BERDYCH: BREAK BERDYCH! Bizarrely, Tomas Berdych is sporting a pair of Adidas Novak Djokovic trainers with the Serb’s face on them! Perhaps Novak gave them to him as a parting gift. Whatever the reason, he has no answer to Federer, even really good approaches being picked off with sublime passes. A big Bird return gets him to 30-30 and rare double fault concedes a break point. A wonderful forehand winner gives the Czech a second chance and he gets the job done at the third time of asking with a rare Federer double fault!

FEDERER 4-3 BERDYCH: Sweat pouring from the adidas cap of Berdych already, looking like he’s into a fifth set! Federer tries an outrageous drop shot that only makes the service line! Got to be one of his poorer attempts that proves he’s human after all. Berdych finds an ace from his locker to inch ahead in the game and rushes Roger the great into a mistake with a heavy forehand and net rush. A backhand winner, hit at a million miles per hour up the line, takes yet another Berdych service game to deuce but the Czech holds with some difficulty.

FEDERER 4-2 BERDYCH: Ace, forehand onto the line, stop volley, ace. Is this an exhibition match? Sublime from Federer.

FEDERER 3-2 BERDYCH: BREAK! Federer’s footwork is outstanding, quickly turning defence into attack when Berdych seemed in charge of the rally. He really doesn’t look 35! A flicked backhand just misses its mark and Berdych is playing really well just to stay in his service games. Federer pounces on an unlucky bounce to hit a winner and force a first break point but the Czech rallies well to force Federer to net. Another unlucky net cord for Berdych allows Federer to pass and an outrageous forehand drive volley gets the job done. Are we about to witness yet another masterclass?

FEDERER 2-2 BERDYCH: Berdych talking to himself at the change of ends, muttering with his eyes shut. He really does look very nervous indeed. He should be nervous, playing the greatest, but has beaten him before. He doesn’t get a look in this time, Federer racing to a love hold.

FEDERER 1-2 BERDYCH: The Berdych forehand looks to be working well early on and he starts with successive winners off that wing. He slices a backhand long but scores with a big first serve and then forces Federer to net.

FEDERER 1-1 BERDYCH: Berdych needing to hit deep and hard to get any kind of success but Federer already moving slickly through the gears, rounding off an easy hold with a forehand winner.

FEDERER 0-1 BERDYCH: A confidence building start for the Birdman, putting away a forehand winner into the open court. But Federer looks sharp already, smashing a forehand into the corner before forcing the Czech to hit long. The Swiss master narrowly misses with a backhand up the line but gets a forehand pass spot on as the game goes to deuce. A Berdych backhand goes wide to hand Federer a first break chance but the Czech rallies well with some heavy hitting to hold. Good effort.
