GAME SET AND MATCH SERENA WILLIAMS! 6-1 6-2. The final game is a mere formality and one which Williams takes to love. She can't seal it with an ace - which would have been fitting - but the serve is good enough to set up the simplest of forehand winners. Serena is through to the second round and she cruised it.

WILLIAMS 6-1 5-2 TATISHVILI. This match is surely only going one way now. But Tatishvili is refusing to accept that and puts up a brave fight to fend off three break points. Her resistance crumbles on the fourth, though, and surely that's curtains now. Serena will come out and serve for the match.
-
WILLIAMS 6-1 4-2 TATISHVILI. Williams consolidates the break and takes another step towards victory. She's served fantastically throughout this match and sure enough she seals another game with an ace.

WILLIAMS 6-1 3-2 TATISHVILI. Decisive? Probably. Serena leads by a set and a break. At 30-30 Serena licks her lips as a second serves comes over and she fizzes a crosscourt forehand which Tatishvili can't get back. Tatishvili tucks away a crosscourt forehand to save one break point but she can't do it again on the second.
-
WILLIAMS 6-1 2-2 TATISHVILI. Another game another slip. This time it's Tatishvili at 30-0. She doesn't completely stack it, managing to get her arms down to break her fall. Serena then seals the game with another ace.
-
WILLIAMS 6-1 1-2 TATISHVILI. Tatishvili quickly moves to 30-0 but a Williams forehand is too hot to handle. Williams shanks a ball that comes up off the baseline and then sends a sliced backhand long to give Tatishvili another hold.
-
WILLIAMS 6-1 1-1 TATISHVILI. More good serving from Williams and she enjoys a rare expedition to the net at 30-15 to bury a smash. She seals the game with her 10th ace of the match.
-
WILLIAMS 6-1 0-1 TATISHVILI. That's better. Tatishvili is not too despondent and comes out with a confident hold at the start of the second set. She's made to work by Williams who finds a lovely crosscourt forehand winner at 40-15. At 40-30, though, Williams slips again - that's three now - and the ball sails past her.

WILLIAMS 6-1 TATISHVILI. Easy as you like. Serena has found her groove. She's cruising here and wraps up the set in almost nonchalant fashion, raining down more aces on her way to taking another love game and the first set.

WILLIAMS 5-1 TATISHVILI. Consecutive double faults from Tatishvili! Absolutely criminal. She lands serves on the next two points but Serena comes up with two forehand winners. It's a resounding break for Williams and it's a double break for Williams.
-
WILLIAMS 4-1 TATISHVILI. Tatishvili didn't seem to get the message when Serena gave her the evils. She's still determined to go after the Williams serve with everything she's got. Occasionally it's effective - like at 40-15 when she hammers home a forehand - but most of the time it's wayward and Williams holds for 4-1.
-
WILLIAMS 3-1 TATISHVILI. Williams nets a backhand and Tatishvili finds some big serves of her own to hold to love. She's up and running on the scoreboard.
-
WILLIAMS 3-0 TATISHVILI. Williams is really starting to wind up her serve now and her fourth ace of the match helps her on her way to 40-15. Tatishvili is looking to be adventurous when she gets a sniff of a slower serve and brings it back to 40-30. Williams promptly puts her back in her place, though, thumping down another ace and sending across a stern look which says, 'don't mess with me, love'.

WILLIAMS 2-0 TATISHVILI. At deuce Williams has a nasty slip and hits the deck. She looks ok - her pride the only thing that's bruised. She picks herself up, dusts herself down and restores that pride with a vengeance, bringing up and converting break point. Tatishvili, so close to breaking serve in the opening game, sees her own serve broken at the first time of asking.
-
WILLIAMS 1-0 TATISHVILI. Serena serves first to get us underway and if this game is a taste of things to come then strap yourselves in for the long haul. It's a ten minute-long deuce fest and after saving no fewer than four break points, Serena eventually stumbles over the line to hold serve.

Apparently the analytics tool IBM SlamTracker has worked out that Tatishvili achieves a 66% set win rate when she wins more than 66% of points on her first serve. In other words: 66% of the time, it works every time.

Serena Williams is once again the favourite here at Wimbledon. She's had disappointing early exits from the Aussie Open and Roland Garros this year but you can never count her out. On her day there is simply no stoppping her. Attempting to stop her at the first hurdle here is 24 year old Tatishvili, a fellow American who was born in Georgia. She's faced Williams twice before and lost both times. Is there any hope of an upset today?
