WILLIAMS 5-7, 0-6 MUGURUZA: GAME, SET, MATCH MUGURUZA! Williams looks cooked here and it’s not fun to see. Successive horrible backhands drift long before a forehand into the deuce corner brings three match points. A Williams backhand catches the line after being initially called long and there is still some fight left from the American as Muguruza nets a backhand herself and then shanks a forehand long. And suddenly it’s all over! Muguruza challenges another line call and it goes her way, Hawkeye showing the ball is long. A second final and a first victory for the Spaniard but what a tournament for Venus Williams. Not the way she would have wanted it to end but she can leave with her head held high.

WILLIAMS 5-7, 0-5 MUGURUZA: Williams has had so much success here but perhaps the pressure of becoming the oldest ever women’s champion has got to her. A 24th unforced error gives Muguruza three more break points and a backhand winner up the line gets the job done. All over bar the shouting.

WILLIAMS 5-7, 0-4 MUGURUZA: Williams needs great tennis now to turn this around and she decides to hit freely, winning the opening point. It doesn’t work twice in a row as she then nets a backhand half way up. A first serve skips off the line, one that Williams can only edge behind to the keeper and with the American’s forehand misfiring and legs looking heavy, Muguruza surely has one hand on the trophy now. Huge hitting.

WILLIAMS 5-7, 0-3 MUGURUZA: BREAK! Williams needs this game otherwise it becomes a really tall order. A lovely drop volley gets her started but Muguruza has her tail up, firing a forehand deep into the ad corner. A fabulous backhand pass follows but the American finds a first serve right when the needs it to level at 30-30. Another exquisite backhand pass up the line brings Muguruza a break point and when Williams volleys wide, it’s another break of serve. All over? Don’t bet on it!

WILLIAMS 5-7, 0-2 MUGURUZA: Williams needs to regroup and regroup fast otherwise the dream of a sixth Wimbledon singles crown will be over. She seems to be forcing the issue, the errors flowing from her racket now. Muguruza races to 40-0 before Williams scores with successive forehand winners to restore some confidence but then tamely nets a backhand.

WILLIAMS 5-7, 0-1 MUGURUZA: BREAK! That was certainly one of the better opening sets of tennis in a final we’ve seen. Both players close to the top of their game. Muguruza wants to seize the moment and grab this final with both hands but a big first serve gets Williams out of trouble at 30-30. Williams fires long to concede break point and when she double faults, Muguruza is gifted the early advantage.

WILLIAMS 5-7 MUGURUZA: SET! Tremendous hussling from Williams, running down a half volley to rifle a forehand past Muguruza at the net. The American appears in control of the next point, Muguruza getting lucky with a mishit that lands in before coming out on top of another brutal forehand exchange. A fabulous backhand defensive lob, from deep into the ad corner, lands right into the corner to bring the Spaniard two set points and when Williams nets after another brilliant rally, it’s the first set in the bag.

WILLIAMS 5-6 MUGURUZA: BREAK! A terrible call on 15-15, a linesman calling a ball long that landed inside the line. But it’s Williams’ turn to struggle, falling off balance and hitting long before netting to bring up break point. She hits long on the first but makes no mistake next time around as Williams return the compliment. The Spaniard will serve for the opening set!
