Anyway, that's us done here - join me for the two remaining quarters, and also for Serena's return, in the mixed doubles.

Williams plays Strycova or Konta next - if it's the latter, she'll need to play better than she did today, and should she meet Halep in the final, she'll need to play much, much better. She definitely can, and probably will.

At 15-0, Serena sends down her second double fault of the match, but a brilliant forehand into the corner, followed by a miraculous backhand into the other corner and clean-up forehand winner, take her two points away; that was so, so good. Serena then loops a forehand towards the sideline and Riske nets; you can probably guess the rest, but in case: an ace down the T and that's that! Riske played really today, but Serena was and is too good - those loopy forehands into one corner, backed up by the glanced backhand into the other are pretty tricky to handle, I daresay, and she did really well to turn it up when she needed to.

Oh dear. Riske sends a big serve down the middle but when Serena gets it back, isn't set to do anything but lope a forehand over the baseline. And, as a consequence, Serena is fortified next point to punish a backhand winner down the line for 0-30 then, at 15-30, whips a topspin forehand onto the sideline. Riske responds though, a big serve down the T good enough to save one break point, then a second serve hard out wide forces a return into the net; that's excellent. But Serena then nobbles her with her classic one-two, forehand into one corner and backhand into the other; again, though, a great second serve brings her back to deuce; excellent behaviour. Playing the next point, Serena slips chasing a ball down - she's fine - and aftr saving game point, reads Riske's put-away to volley a winner, whooping with delight. A double fault follows, and Serena will now serve for the match!

Serena starts the game on a buzz, winning a long rally - something she's not done in a while - before two huge forehands and an ace give her 40-0. A second serve service winner nudges her in front once more, and she looks primed to attack when Riske serves next.

At 30-15, Williams absolutely mashes a backhand return cross-court, and that's sort of indicative: she's not playing well, but every now and again does stuff no one else can, that no one can defend. Riske responds though, earning game point ... but looking to go for things, serves a double fault. Again, though, she maintains composure and selevels the set with a backhand smoked down the line.

At 40-30, Fiske mishits one onto the line; it's called out then overruled, and a forehand error from Serena leaves her break point down; she's made 15 unforced so far this match. And look at that! Fiske attacks her serve with a forehand, opening the court for another, whacked cross-court for a winner! She's had five break points this afternoon, and she's taken them all!

Serena gets to 0-30 but Fiske catches up ... only to be sent wide with a forehand and sent sprawling by the clean-up. But a big serve earns Fiske deuce ... only for her to, well, how can we say this nicely .... choke. First, a tentative forehand goes long, then a double fault puts her in deep, deep trouble.

Williams powers through a hold. I'd not be at all surprised to see her break in the next game, but Riske has done well under pressure so far.

Er, she can't. While I was preoccupied with Halep serving out - she plays Svitolina or Muchova next, and looked very impressive - Serena broke back immediately. That's what I'd call a tennis film: Brokeback Immediately.

Riske is full of confidence now, getting to 15-40 with the help of a winner off each flank. A big forehand then forces Williams to stretch, the ball loops up, and another forehand sees it away. That'a two breaks in a row for Fiske or, to put it another way, if she can avoid losing her serve she's in the semi-finals!

This is excellent from Riske, finding first serves when she needs them, and when Serena dumps a backhand into the net, she has three set points. AND SHE ONLY NEEDS ONE! Another first serve lands in, Serena laces a backhand wide, and we're going to have a decider! You've got to admire Riske, who played well in the first set, lost it out of nowhere, and still kept at it.

Look at Alison Riske! She gets herself to break point and then a booming forehand facilitates a drop half-volley! In 90 seconds, she'll serve for the set!

Riske holds to 15; can she maintain her level at the business end, even if Serena ups hers?

Riske hits a lovely winner down the line at 40-15 and pushes off it to reach deuce. Serena then wastes game point but serving a double, only to snatch it back with a brilliant backhand, played off one knee and into Riske's backhand corner. From there, she cleans up.

Riske powers through a hold - what will she try to break? Standing on the baseline worked well in the first set, so there's probably no point deviating from that - she just has to hit better shots.

Another comfortable hold for Serena.

Riske opens her shoulders to wham a backhand winner down the line - it gives her 40-15 - and Serena then loops a forehand out, which is still out when she reviews it.

An ace followed by a forehand error takes Serena from 30-all to deuce; she quickly cleans up the game from there.
