Wozniacki plays Shuai Zhang next, and that was a very solid display from her. She didn't face a single break point, and stayed solid through Kudermetova's good passage, which lasted an entire set and breaker.

Wozniacki forces Kudermetova to deuce with a lovely backhand taken out the air and sent gliding across the face of the net; she's two points from round 3. And a net-cord earns her match point, which Kudermetova saves, but then after a great serve out wide she overhits the clean-up! Still, she works it out again ... but Wozniacki takes her there again. This time, a backhand cross-court is low over the net, Kudermetova can't dig it out, and that's that!

Elsewhere, Martic has made it 1-1 against Potapova.

The players swap holds, and Wozniacki needs one more game for victory.

Yes indeed! Kudermetova gets to 0-30 ... and then Wozniacki wins four points on the spin. She's two holds away.

At 40-15, Kudermetova picks the wrong side when she's got the court open and Wozniacki capitalises, hustling to advantage. Martina reckons she became discouraged after playing a good set and breaker but still ending up with a big, fat nowt. Still, she hangs on here, after a succession of deuces, and that will help her because she needed something.

Wozniacki is starting to enjoy herself, holding to love. Martina notes that Kudermetova plays the shot she's decided to play, not the shot the ball dictates she play.

Kudermetova nets a backhand at advantage down, and might that be that? Wozniacki clenches her fist, and well she might, because she hasn't looked likely to be broken so far.

Wozniacki quickly levels the set. I wonder how she feels about Wimbledon; on the one hand, it's impossible to predict who'll win the women's majors, but on the other it's impossible to see how she might win it. Still, here win in Australia last year was, like Halep's in France, a relief. Both have worked so hard, and though most people assumed Halep would get there in the end, it was hard to feel any confidence that Wozniacki might. She's playing with house money now.

A wild backhand from Kudermetova gives Wozniacki 15-30 and hse quickly turns it into a break point. Kudermetova saves the first, and a serve slices down the T handles the second! That's excellent, and in commentary, Martina is impressed. Eventually, she holds.

Elsewhere, Potapova has taken the first set off Petra Martic, the number 24 seed.

Wozniacki snatches a mini-break and consolidates, but then Kudermetova does brilliantly to seize control of her next serve and put away a forehand winner. But she loses her next serve too and this time, Wozniacki doesn't waste the advantage, a serve eliciting a netted return. Still, that was a tough old set, and Kudermetova will feel she's competing on the level.

Wozniacki is 1/7 at the net, and she spurns an immediate chance for a mini-break by hitting into it having done all the hard work. They struggle to 3-3.

That's very impressive from Kudermetova, who holds comfortably to 15. Tie-break it is.

Kudermetova is struggling to make much impression on the Wozniacki serve, but at 40-15, Wozniacki makes it for her, half-arsing an approach into the net. But a serve down the middle and a long return quickly resolve matters, and now well see what Kudermetova can do under pressure.

Kudermetova looks good out there, but at 40-30 she goes long with a forehand ... then sorts it with some deft net-play.

Another hold apiece. I wonder what Wozniacki's thinking here - should she make Kudermetova hit as many balls as possible? I guess that suits her style, because she doesn't hit it hard.

Kudermetova calls for the trainer - she's got a problem with her wrist, which is already strapped, and the match stops for a good 10 minutes. When she returns, she does well to hold to 30, from 0-30 down.

Wozniacki gets 0-15, so Kudermetova whams an ace out wide; later in the game, she finds another big shot at an opportune moment, a backhand down the line saving break point and giving her deuce. Eventually, she seals her hold with a lovely backhand drop.
