Svitolina didn't play well today, struggling especially with Muchova's slow balls, but she found a way and came back really well in the first set. She plays Halep next, and will need to do much better if she wants to avoid a hiding.

An amazing stretch-volley from Muchova gets her 30-all - Svitolina will be feeling it now - but a volley gives her match-point and a gigantic serve out wide is all she needs! Svitolina becomes the first Ukrainian woman to reach a grand slam semi-final!

Lovely from Muchova, forced to deuce but holding her nerve to close from there, finishing with a wrongfooting volley. Svitolina will now serve for it a second time - knowing that Muchova came back from this position to beat Pliskova yesterday.

Muchova manages to get to 30-all, and what a backhand she plays next, wiped inside-out down the line; glorious! And Svitolina then has 47 opportunities to save her break, picking the wrong shot each time, before she goes wide with a forehand.

Yep, Muchova has gone. At 30-40, not only is her second serve weak but predictably weak. Svitolina moves in, waits, has a cup of tea and clouts down the line for a double break. She's serve for the semis in 90 second's time.

At 30-15 Svitolina serves a double, but her forehand is enough to win the next two points - Muchova is fading, and her shots have lost all their pop.

Svitolina earns two break points then tries a drop from the baseline, getting nowhere near. But Muchova then dumps a tired-looking backhand, and suddenly this feels like it's nearly over; Muchova slinks to her chair, Svitolina strides.

A big forehand gets Muchova break point, but Svitolina chucks forehands of her own to save it, Muchova missing with a lob ... then a forehand when she earns another go. Eventually, Svitolina hangs on.

But here she comes, a massive forehand getting her 0-30, and Muchova collapses, ceding her hard-earned break as quickly as she possibly could.

Excellent from Muchova, breaking yet again - thanks, ultimately, to a forehand bashed onto the line. She looks extremely happy, and will feel that Svitolina can be beaten because she's not playing well.

Muchova needed that, holding to 15. She chucked that last set away because, though Svitolina improved through it, she didn't play well enough to wrest and press home an advantage.

Svitolina holds to 30, though Muchova helps her on set point, chasing down an injudicious drop but able only to set up the put-away. Muchova will do well not to worry that she's missed her chance, because she's missed her chance.

Muchova tries getting back to her serve-volley thing and manages 30-0, but Svitolina's forehand brings us 30-all before, at 40-30, Muchova gets tight, sending down a double and then netting a backhand to cede break point. She recovers though, sending a forehand down the line, only to botch a volley ... and then win a glorious exchange at the net. Deuce again, and this has become a huge game. Another break point comes and goes - Muchova isn't giving this up - and another, Muchova's forehand controlling it. But she can't take her own game point when it arrives and this time when Svitolina makes another opportunity, her forehand drops long. In 90 seconds, Svitolina will serve for a set that Muchova thought was hers.

Svitolina opens this next service-game with an ace, the first of the match, and Muchova has shrunk, offering the unforced errors that give her opponent 40-0. But then a second serve comes down so slowly that she can't help but punish it down the line, and Svitolina then nets; the standard here is not great, but she finds a first serve next up and holds.

Svitolina gets herself to 0-30 but Muchova strong-stands, opening the space for a forehand cleansed down the line. Suddenly, though, it's not so easy and she wafts a nondescript forehand over the baseline then nets a backhand and bosh, there goes her advantage. Svitolina will feel that class is telling now, but the reality is that she didn't have to do all that much there.

Svitolina holds easily enough, but can she break?

A drop shot, hit with lovely disguise, gives Svitolina a glimmer, making it 30-15, but a fine serve out wide, followed by a sensational half-volley that clambers over the net and dies - och! - gives Muchova game point, and she quickly presses it home. In 90 seconds' time, Svitolina will serve to stay in the set.

Svitolina nets a simple forehand at 15-0, but finds some rhythm to win the next three points.

Muchova, who did brilliantly in outlasting Karolina Pliskova in the longest match of the competition yesterday, is really enjoying herself. She sticks away a volley with a leaping overhead for 30-0, then sends Svitolina scurrying about the baseline before diddling her at the net. Her backhand slice is working really well, and when Svitolina tries to respond in kind, she nets.
