Next for Kontaveit is Karolina Muchova, and next for us is Khachanov (10) v Lopez. Join me for what should be a belter.

Watson battles to 30-all then forces a break point, but a big forehand cross-court puts paid to that. A service winner follows, then a glorious forehand dumped onto the sideline, and that's that for Watson, who'll be disappointed not to have taken her chance in the first set, when Kontaveit played dustbins, but was, in the end, outclassed.

Watson saves three break points but Kontaveit forces a fourth and is sent scurrying to the corner to retrieve a forehand. She hoists a tame lob but at the net, Watson bumps a tamer forehand over the baseline. Kontaveidt will now serve for the match, a double break to the good.

Kontaveit consolidates. I'd not be surprised to see her break next up.

While I was busy with Pliskova finishing off Puig, Kontaveit broke. Watson is not getting out of this.

Kontaveidt is holding pretty easily now, and looking at home out there. It's not entirely obvious how Watson can stop her, except tennis isn't really like that - it only takes an error or two, or a loss of concentration, and everything can change.

Huge hold for Watson.

Watson gets to 0-30 but Kontaveit is playing properly now, retrieving the situation. I'd not be surprised to see her break right away.

Watson finds herself at 0-40, so the good old crowd do some cheering. They love tennis, they do. For one day a year. And Watson goes long with a backhand, contriving to lose a set that her opponent could barely have done more to hand her. It's a long way back from here.
Meanwhile, elsewhere...

A love hold for Kontaveit, so Watson will now serve to stay in the set.

Watson 5-5 Kontaveit

You wonder if Watson has missed her chance because surely Kontaveit will settle, used to the court, allowing quality to take over. But Watson holds to 15, and looks pretty relaxed in so doing.

Watson 4-4 Kontaveit

It takes a lot, but Watson holds. Neither player will want to speak of this set ever again.

The mowing on court 1 is kind of strange - it looks like it's made of corduroy. And these are playing like they're wearing corduroy, making error after error and winding up playing deuces because neither of them can win more than one point in a row. Eventually, and after surviving two break points, Kontaveit hangs on.

Watson struggles to deuce but then Kontaveit clobbers a forehand winner cross-court to raise break point. Watson then obliges with a double fault and that's four breaks in six games. It's not because the returns are on-point either.

A double from Kontaveit gives Watson break point, and Kontaveit goes with a forehand! The standard here is not vintage.

Kontaveit is struggling here, netting a backhand to give Watson 15-30. But she forces herself through a hold, to get into the match

Watson consolidates easily enough.

Kontaveit finds herself 0-40 down almost immediately, saves one break point, and then serves her second double fault of the game. The crowd are too knowledgeable to cheer, no they're not.

It's not been a great year for Watson, but she'll take heart from a decent showing in round 1 and will fancy her chances against Kontaveit,
