GAME, SET AND MATCH! – GAUFF 6-4 6-3 VESNINA. The 17-year-old breaks again and claims victory on her second match point as the Russian double faults at the worst possible time. The No.20 seed is into round three with an impressive straight sets victory in one hour and 10 minutes against the former semi finalist here.
GAUFF 6-4 5-3 VESNINA. Elena will feel she’s hugely unfortunate there. She blows a poor backhand into the net at 15-30 but is then left smiling ruefully as Gauff improvises with a scoop shot that loops into the air, hits the top of the net cord and dribbles over. The American then nails a crosscourt backhand that seems to bounce awkwardly for the Russian to move within a game of victory.
GAUFF 6-4 4-3 VESNINA. Pure ‘Tekkers’ from Vesnina. She glides into the net and puts away a supreme, angled volley to keep her hopes alive. At the change of ends she has another massage on her back from the physio. It’s going to be a tall order to combat both that and Gauff - although there have been a few signs the teenager is getting a bit tight at times.
GAUFF 6-4 4-2 VESNINA. That’s a very, very big hold for Gauff. A pair of double faults have her wobbling all over the show at 15-30 but she manages to come out on top in a brilliant rally to cork a wrong-footing backhand winner. The big serve then returns with a flourish and she maintains her advantage.
GAUFF 6-4 3-2 VESNINA. The MTO seems to have got Elena motoring again. She looks assured and up for the battle as she holds to 30 to stay in touch. Can Gauff regain her focus and keep her at arm’s length?

BREAK! – GAUFF 6-4 3-1 VESNINA. That’s a howler from Gauff and Vesnina has a lifeline. The American appears set to back up her double break at 30-0 and 40-30 but can’t get over the line. Vesnina finds a big return and forehand winner to earn a BP and Gauff hands it to her on a plate when she takes too long deciding on a mid-court forehand and inexplicably dumps it into the net.

BREAK! – GAUFF 6-4 3-0 VESNINA. It’s one-way traffic. Vesnina defends hard from her baseline but is almost left doing the splits as Gauff pushes her from one corner to the other. The American forces the error and that’s another break. Cue a call for the physio and then a medical time-out from Vesnina. She seems to be having trouble with her back.
GAUFF 6-4 2-0 VESNINA. Elena lashes erratically at a return and sees it clatter into the net. It means Gauff consolidates to 15 and she looks the more assured at the moment after the lift of winning such a close opening set.

BREAK! – GAUFF 6-4 1-0 VESNINA. That was far too tame and error-strewn from Vesnina. She slaps a weak backhand into the net to follow up a double fault and hands over an instant break at the start of Set 2.

SET! – GAUFF 6-4 VESNINA. The 17-year-old holds her nerve from 30-30 to serve out the opener in 32 minutes.
GAUFF 5-4 VESNINA. Rapid. Vesnina rediscovers her serving mojo and then sizzles a backhand winner right up the line to rattle through a lightning love hold.
GAUFF 5-3 VESNINA. That’s rather splendid. A standing readjustment to cork a backhand to the opposite corner seals a hold to 15 for Gauff as he consolidates with aplomb. Over 70 per cent of her first serves aren’t being returned which doesn’t make good reading for Vesnina’s camp.

BREAK! – GAUFF 4-3 VESNINA. It’s the No.20 seed who strikes first! Vesnina comes under the cosh for the first time and faces two break points when she throws down an untimely double fault. She plays a fine tactic trying to fend off the first but then overcooks her backhand pass and sees it miss by a whisker. Advantage Gauff!
GAUFF 3-3 VESNINA. That’s clutch serving. Gauff dumps a volley into the net and coughs up two break points. The serve blasts the American out of danger and gets her over the line from deuce, but Vesnina will rue a miss on her second BP when she skewed a tight forehand into the net from a mid-court position.
Meanwhile, in the men's draw...
GAUFF 2-3 VESNINA. It’s another heart in mouth moment at this year’s tournament as Gauff takes a tumble trying to find a forehand on the run. She gives a thumbs up as she gets to her feet but can’t do much to worry Vesnina. It’s another rampant hold for the Russian.
GAUFF 2-2 VESNINA. A first double fault does little to ruffle Coco’s feathers as a pair of aces do the heavy lifting in a quick-fire hold. Not much to engage the crowd just yet.
GAUFF 1-2 VESNINA. The serve is purring for Vesnina in these opening exchanges and it’s another very simple and effective hold for the 34-year-old Russian.
GAUFF 1-1 VESNINA. It’s not so routine for Coco as she has to rally from 15-30 and then deuce. A wide ace – a second of the game – pulls the teenager level.
