Top-seeded Russian Nadia Petrova and Switzerland's second seed Patty Schnyder both advanced on Wednesday to the quarter-finals of the Gold Coast event. Petrova moved past China's Na Li 7-5 6-3 while Schnyder beat American Angela Haynes 6-4 6-1.
World number 14 Schnyder reached her first grand slam semi-final at last year's Australian Open and is in a confident mood ahead of the 2005 tournament starting in Melbourne on January 17.
"It's the first tournament of the year but I love being in Australia and I love the conditions so it's a great chance for me to go even further than last year," Schnyder said of her hopes for the Australian Open.
Italy's Flavia Pennetta and Bulgaria's Sesil Karatantcheva also advanced with three-set wins over France's Camille Pin and Russia's seventh seed Elena Likhovtseva respectively.
