Dechy started the match with nothing to lose and sometimes outplayed the Russian from the baseline in the opening set, which the Frenchwoman won 6-2.
But nerves played their part and the 25-year-old missed the opportunity for a cucial break in the second set.
Zvonareva recovered to come back with a large number of backhand winners and win the match 2-6 6-3 6-4.
Top seed Amelie Mauresmo was in stunning form despite the jetlag.
The Frenchwoman, who won in Linz last Sunday, decided to play this tournament last week in order to boost her confidence ahead of the WTA Championship.
The world number two Mauresmo outplayed Iveta Benesova of the Czech Republic 6-2 6-2 and could face Venus Williams in the last eight if the American beat Ukraine's Yuliana Fedak.
In other action, seventh seed Nadia Petrova of Russia beat American Amy Frazier 6-4 6-3.
