Mauresmo played a decent match to edge the former top ten player in a match which lasted one hour and fifteen minutes.
Mauresmo, who lost in the first round of Moscow and Zurich, looked very sharp at the net breaking the Japanese on five occasions for a possible third title.
In other results today, Sixth-seeded Russian Nadia Petrova, who grabed her first career title in Linz last week, advanced with a 6-2 6-2 triumph over countrywoman Yaroslava Shvedova.
Kveta Peschke of the Czech Republic also reached the quarter-finals crushing Sesil Karatantcheva 6- 1 6-0. Peschke has dropped just three games in winning her first two matches, but will have a tougher matchup in the quarterfinals with fourth-seeded Elena Dementieva of Russia.
Mauresmo is the highest seed playing this week after American Lindsay Davenport and Russian Maria Sharapova withdrew earlier in the week.
Davenport, the top seed, is ailing from the flu and Sharapova, the two seed, suffered a right thumb sprain during off-court training.
