The USA have named NCAA basketball player Luke Hancock as their official flag bearer for the opening ceremony of the 27th Summer Universiade.
The Games will officially begin on July 6 when over 12,000 athletes from more than 160 countries will march into the Kazan- Arena Stadium.
Hancock plays forward at the University of Louisville and was selected out of over 280 athletes from 18 different sports on the USA Team.
"I am very proud. I am not sure exactly what to expect, but I am looking forward to the opportunity. said Hancock. “I'm honored to lead the way for the US. I'm excited.”
Hancock is a more than just a standout forward for Louisville; he was also voted Most Outstanding Player of the 2013 Final Four, leading the Cardinals to an NCAA Championship.
In the championship game against Michigan, he totaled 22 points, three assists and two steals, hitting all five of his three-point attempts. He had 20 points and four rebounds against Wichita State in the national semi-finals.
On June 24, Hancock’s dad, Bill, died of cancer, just days before the Universiade team was chosen. Hancock made the choice to pay tribute to his father’s memory by going to Kazan to play basketball for his country.
