Undefeated Hungary beat Russia, the silver medallists in the 2000 Sydney Games, 7-5 in a tight semi-final, while Serbia and Montenegro, the European champions, beat Greece 7-3.
Driver Tamas Kasas scored a hat trick to lead Hungary.
"We played well tonight, especially on defence. It was a hard game physically," said Hungarian centre fielder Gergely Kiss, who scored twice.
Hungary led 5-3 in the second quarter, but two goals by Russian centre back Sergey Garbuzov tied the game at half-time.
Centre back Pedrag Jokic scored two goals to lead Serbia and Montenegro, which jumped to a 4-1 lead in the second period and was never headed.
Hungary has won the Olympic title seven times. Serbia and Montenegro took the gold three times playing as Yugoslavia, the last time in 1988.
Greece and Russia will play for the bronze medal. Greece's previous best Olympic finish was sixth in Atlanta eight years ago.
