An 8-1 win over Finland earlier in the day had left the Scots in high spirits but they went down 7-6 to table toppers Russia on the last stone on Sunday.
The Scots opened with last stone advantage but gave up a steal of one in the first end.
They made amends for that in the second when Muirhead delivered a perfectly-judged draw inside two Russian counters to score one.
The teams then swapped twos in the next two ends, and a further two in the fifth end, when Russia's skip had a hit and stay and gave Russia a 5-3 lead at half-time.
The Scots could only score one in the sixth end, and with the teams swapping singles all the way to the tenth end, it left Russia taking a narrow victory.
"It was one of those games that just seemed never be on our side," said Muirhead, whose rink play Hungary on Monday.
"It came down to the last stone, and these are the games that you really want to win.
"There's still a long, long way to go, but we need to step it up for the rest of our games."
Victory took Russia's record to four straight wins, a feat also matched by Denmark after they battled to a 7-5 win over Hungary.
While Norway recorded their first win of the competition, via a 9-6 triumph over Estonia, Germany beat Sweden 7-4 and Finland downed world champions Switzerland 8-3 thanks to a strong second-half performance.
