Morgan Schneiderlin is surplus to requirements at Manchester United and is set to be reunited with his former boss Ronald Koeman at Everton - reports The Sun. Jose Mourinho is in the middle of a clear-out since taking over at Old Trafford and believes that the former Southampton midfielder does not fit with his plans for next season. Schneiderlin - who cost £25m a year ago - would be available for a reduced fee, and Koeman is desperate to team up with the Frenchman again at Goodison Park.
Paper Round's view: Schneiderlin's struggles at Manchester United have been difficult to watch. This is an extremely talented player, cultured enough to open opponents up but physical enough to offer a defensive shield. So why would Jose want rid of the Frenchman? Well, it's no secret that Mourinho has a preferred shape to the way he wants his teams to play, with one defensive midfielder, one deep-lying playmaking midfielder and one box-to-box goalscorer breaking forward to support a lone striker and the two inverted wingers. It's a system that works, whether you enjoy watching it or not, and unfortunately Schneiderlin doesn't quite fit any of the roles. He's halfway between holding and creative midfielder, but Mourinho doesn't have room for such ambiguity in his squads. Either you fit the template or you're out.
If Everton are able to take advantage then they would be signing a terrific footballer and a major upgrade on their current central midfield options. There will surely be competition for his signature from elsewhere in the Premier League however, so Koeman will have to move quickly.

City and Liverpool battle for Andros

Andros Townsend's release clause could be met by both Manchester City and Liverpool, reports The Telegraph. Townsend's impressive displays for Newcastle in the club's relegation season caught the eye of a number of Premier League scouts, with Crystal Palace, Southampton and West Ham already known as suitors of the winger. But top-flight big-hitters City and Liverpool believe that the direct wide man would be a bargain buy and are interested in a cut-price deal.
Paper Round's view: No, check the diary again, we're nowhere near April 1. Pep Guardiola is genuinely being linked with one of the least tactically nuanced footballers on the planet. What Townsend does can be effective in his way (and it's something that would actually be pretty useful for England over in France right now), but the winger has a level. Upper mid-table in the Premier League is about as good as he's going to get, unless he somehow manages to develop a string of other skills to go alongside his cut-inside-and-shoot routine.
It's hard to think of a player less suited to Guardiola's style of play, and that's before we even get to the issue of who he'd have to oust to get into the starting XI. Kevin de Bruyne? No thanks, we've got Andros. The link to Jurgen Klopp's interesting Liverpool outfit is only marginally less ridiculous.

Chelsea plan double Italian swoop

Antonio Conte wants to bring two Italy internationals to Chelsea, with Antonio Candreva and Leonardo Bonucci in his sights - reports The Sun. The Chelsea boss wants experience in his squad and has earmarked the pair as perfect summer additions. Winger Candreva has told his club Lazio that he wishes to leave, with Inter Milan the initial favourites before Chelsea entered the race for his signature. And centre-back Bonucci has anchored Juventus' recent dominance in Italy and would provide experience alongside Gary Cahill and Kurt Zouma in a back-three at Chelsea next season.
Paper Round's view: Conte is Italian, we know that. And yes, he is also the current Italy manager. But that doesn't mean he is going to sign every single half-decent player in his national squad for Chelsea next season. Not that "half-decent" is a fair description of these latest links. Bonucci and Candreva are classy players, among the best that their country has right now, but both are getting on a bit and neither will come cheap. Candreva doesn't really fill a gap in the Chelsea squad when you look at the quality of options in the wide positions that awaits Conte. And while Bonucci at least makes sense in terms of what the Stamford Bridge side need, it would take quite a sizeable offer to tear the 29-year-old away from Turin.
