The story of day two – India in the driver's seat
India secure big first-innings lead as Jasprit Bumrah takes 6-45
Jasprit Bumrah was the star of day two of the second Test, taking 6-45 in a world-class display of reverse-swing bowling to leave England on the ropes in Vizag.
England were bowled out for 253, leaving them 143 behind, with India stretching the lead to 171 by stumps.
Only one team has ever won in India with a first-innings deficit that large, and that was England in Hyderabad a week ago. But pulling off such a comeback two Tests in succession will be a huge ask for Ben Stokes' side, who will return on day three well behind in the game and needing something special to get back into it.
Another world-class bowling performance was the stand-out feature of the morning session as a James Anderson master class ensured that India added just 60 runs to their overnight score.
Yashasvi Jaiswal did reach his maiden Test double hundred, finally falling for 209 – a knock that could well prove to be match defining.
But Anderson picked up the key wickets of Jaiswal and Ravichandran Ashwin to finish with figures of 3-47 from 25 economical overs.
And it was young spinners Rehan Ahmed and Shoaib Bashir who wrapped up the innings, with India all out for 396.
England started their first innings with a bang, putting together fifty partnerships for the first two wickets, as Zak Crawley tore into the India bowling attack.
Ben Duckett (21 from 17) fell to Kuldeep Yadav before the outstanding Crawley took on one attacking shot too many, offering a tough catching chance of Axar Patel that Shreyas Iyer did well to hold on to.
Crawley's departure for 76 from 78 balls proved to be a big turning point in the game, as India went back to Bumrah, who immediately got the ball to talk with reverse swing. And the wickets fell with alarming regularity as Bumrah ripped through England.
Joe Root was the first to fall victim to Bumrah’s wizardry, worked over before edging one through to first slip.
And Ollie Pope joined Root back in the hutch in Bumrah’s next over, as England’s hero from Hyderabad saw his stumps castled by a fizzing reversing yorker.
England attempted to rally, but Jonny Bairstow’s 25-run resistance came to an end when he edged behind off Bumrah once again.
It wasn’t all about Bumrah for India, with Kuldeep Yadav also bowling beautifully for 3-71, and he cleaned up Ben Foakes (6) with a beauty to open up England’s tail, with the left-arm spinner being handed a gift when Rehan Ahmed (6) sliced an attacking shot straight to Gill in the ring.
Ben Stokes attempted to lift England with a counter-attacking approach with the tail. But the England skipper was cleaned up by Bumrah for 47 in style.
And the speedster bagged a deserved six-for by finishing off the tail as he had Tom Harley caught behind for 21 and James Anderson trapped in-front for 6.
Bumrah’s efforts took him up to 152 Test wickets, which have come at an average of just 20.28. No bowler in the men’s professional era to have taken 150 Test wickets can match those numbers, with only Sydney Barnes from the early twentieth century having a better record in the history of the game.
England face the prospect of a bruising third day when the return on Sunday morning, with India racing to 28-0 in a mini session before the close, to stretch their lead to 171 runs with ten wickets still in hand.

Stokes gambles with an over of Rehan before the close as he looks to sneak out a wicket in the Vizag gloom.
Rohit cuts him away for four, and the two batters meet in the middle for a conflab… which also has the added bonus of ensuring this will be the final over.
That brings an end to a day that firmly belongs to India.

Jaiswal crunches Bashir for three straight fours, the first through mid-on, the second cut away fine and the third again driven back through mid-on. This is punishing for England.

Anderson continues and he’s bowling well, but there’s nothing resembling scoreboard pressure and India’s openers see him out.

India lead England by 153 runs
It’s young Bashir who takes the new ball, and a half volley off the final ball of the over is given the treatment again by Rohit.

We’ll have a few overs from England tonight to see us through to the close, and they need wickets badly.
This opening partnership will look to add some quick runs though and put the game out of sight, and Rohit Sharma goes on the attack straight away against Anderson, cutting him away for four to get the scoreboard ticking.
Wonderful bowling from Bumrah
That was a majestic performance from Jasprit Bumrah, who finishes with figures of 6-45 from his 15.5 overs.
The moment he got the ball to reverse at the start of his second spell he was close to unplayable, and he’s put India in the driving seat in this match.
It wasn’t just his figures that were the key, but the players that he removed, with Bumrah dismissing Ollie Pope, Joe Root, Jonny Bairstow and Ben Stokes to rip the heart out of the England batting line-up.

That one’s plumb and Anderson knows it, not even bothering with the review.
Bumrah traps him straight in front with a full and straight in-swinger, and it’s six wickets for the India star.

Anderson smears the ball down the leg-side boundary, sweeping well after picking the ball out of Kuldeep’s hand. He rolls out the reverse next up, and it looks like he gets something on it to send the ball fizzing through Bharat and away for two, but the umpire signals byes. Replays show that did catch the glove and was a catching opportunity.
The final ball of the over is toe-ended into the ground as Anderson looks for the leg-side boundary again and seven runs come from the over.

England do really well to see out another test Bumrah over, with Anderson digging out a particularly fiery yorker.

Ouch! Bashir has a big swing at Mukesh, who whips up a hand and takes a stinger as he fails to hold on to the sharpest of caught and bowled chances.
Bashir whips one off his legs and away for four, belying his position at the bottom of England’s batting order.

Tom Hartley caught by Shubman Gill bowled Jasprit Bumrah for 21 (24b)
Hartley swings hard right from the start of Bumrah’s latest over, with a thick edge flying of the slips and away for four. A sweeper goes back immediately afterwards, but it’s not needed as a lifter draws the edge and it’s a five-wicket-haul for India’s brilliant fast bowler.
It’s Gill once again who takes the catch, a simple one, and Hartley goes for 21.
Shoaib Bashir is in at number eleven, and the ball flies away for four byes first up. England will take anything then can get at this stage.
India review off the last ball hoping for an lbw against Anderson to finish off the innings, and replays are inclusive as to whether there was an inside edge.

Anderson’s aim here is to stick around and try and give Hartley the chance to have a swing, and England’s veteran sees out a maiden from Mukesh.

Ben Stokes bowled by Jasprit Bumrah for 47 (54b)
Bumrah comes back into the attack and he gets the key wicket of Stokes.
The ball hoops in and keeps a little low, skidding through the England captain to clean him up. It’s his 150th wicket in Tests at an average of just 20.5 – serious numbers.
It was just starting to get a little worrying for India how quickly the runs were flowing, but Bumrah has ensured they will almost certainly get a big first-innings lead.
James Anderson is in at number ten and this could be wrapped up pretty quickly.

Mukesh gets another go with the old ball, hoping for a bit of reverse. One way or another this is going to be an interesting match-up.
He very nearly gets Hartley to chop on with an inside edge off the second ball of the over. But Hartley has plenty of quality with the bat and picks up two with a decent drive before clipping one off his legs for four. It’s a no ball too and Mukesh shakes his head in frustration – he’s not got it right today.

Ashwin continues and Stokes drives him emphatically to the long-on boundary. The runs keep on flowing and while the captain is there England will still have hope keeping the game alive in this evening session.

Hartley lines up the last ball of Kuldeep’s over and swings it high and over the rope for six. He didn’t quite catch that cleanly, but it had enough on it to go all the way.

Stokes launches Ashwin over midwicket with a big slog sweep for six that flies into the stands.
England can’t be asked to follow-on from here, and they trail by 191. We’ve been in this sort of situation before, but you’d say that England need to really limit the deficit here if they are to stand a chance of pulling off another heist. The pitch is almost certain to break up, so any sort of fourth-innings chase is going to be a huge challenge, never mind one of 200+.

England have definitely changed their mindset, and offer two chances as they loft big shots off Kuldeep. Stokes is the first to try it, finding the boundary on the bounce. And Hartley then lofts one that falls short of the outfielder.
There’s a slim chance late in the over as Stokes slashes at one and it fizzes past Rohit at slip. He’d have done miraculously well to hold that, and it runs away for four.

Ashwin continues and Hartley skips down the track to him, knocking it for a couple. Is that a sign that England might be changing to a positive approach in an attempt to eat up the deficit, rather than just sitting in and waiting for the inevitable wickets to come.

Rehan Ahmed caught by Shubman Gill bowled Kuldeep Yadav for 6 (15b)
Yes Kulee,” comes the cry from Bharat behinds the stumps as the left-arm spinner continues.
But Kuldeep doesn’t have much to do with the next dismissal as Rehan goes after a harmless-looking short one and toe ends it straight to Shubman Gill at midwicket, who catches at the second attempt. That’s not great.

Bumrah’s spell comes to an end, but there’s not much of a reprieve for England as Ashwin comes into the attack. He’s got a really good record against Stokes and dismissed him with a ripper in the last Test.
One single comes from the over.

Kuldeep is a class act, and he’s taking his chance in the India deep, getting a top-spinner to lift off the surface and forcing Stokes to whip back out of the shot.
The over goes for three singles as England enter a spell where recovery is desperately required.

Fair play Rehan. He gets through a Bumrah over and finishes it off with a tidy drive down the ground that runs away for four.
He’s a decent batter for sure, but he won’t have faced many scenarios out in the middle as testing as this.

Ben Foakes bowled by Kuldeep Yadav for 6 (10b)
Wow, that is an absolute gem from Kuldeep and England are in serious trouble.
He gets one to dip and beats Foakes on the outside edge, who was playing for more turn, and the ball crashes into off stump. Foakes goes for 6 and Rehan Ahmed is the new batter, with England still more than 200 runs behind.

Bumrah continues and Stokes gets off strike thanks to a Bharat error behind the stumps. Foakes is drawn forward by an away-swinger but the delivery doesn’t find the edge.
And England’s number seven takes the opportunity for a delivery onto his pads to clip a four.
The ball is still talking for Bumrah, who is cleverly switching up his in and out-swingers with the ball still getting reverse.

Stokes looks untroubled by an optimistic lbw shout from Kuldeep, and then pulls dismissively for four.
England’s skipper will keep the strike for the next Bumrah over.

Jonny Bairstow caught by Shubman Gill bowled Jasprit Bumrah for 25 (39b)
Bumrah has another and Bairstow has to go. He lures him into a prod, which Gill clings on to at first slip. It’s good bowling, but that’s not a great shot. It's the fourth time that Bumrah has dismissed Bairstow in Test cricket in a one-sided match-up.
England are in need of something special here if they are to avoid going into the second innings with a big deficit. Yes they won from such a position in the first Test, but that was an historic effort, and it’s going to be a huge ask here in Vizag.
It’s Bumrah’s fifth maiden of the day too.

Stokes doesn’t quite get a slog sweep right, but his uncontrolled shot off Kuldeep drops safe and they run three.

Here we go then. Unsurprisingly it is Bumrah who takes the first over after tea, looking to pick up where he left off in that afternoon session.
The Indian pacer’s performance had Alastair Cook and Steven Finn waxing lyrical in the TNT Sports studio during the interval.
Bairstow is pretty vulnerable to this sort of threat (who isn’t) and he was almost pinned off his very first ball before tea. But the England number five does well to get through the over, a maiden.

The story of the afternoon session
Bumrah bags Pope and Root in brilliant spell; Crawley hits sparkling 76
The session started with a bang, as England kicked on in a big way after lunch, with the departure of Ben Ducket to Kuldeep Yadav for 21 from 17 balls doing little to slow the scoring rate.
It was Zak Crawley who took the attack to India, bringing peak Bazball to the series as he laced 13 boundaries in his aggressive innings. But that attacking approach eventually saw him come unstuck as he skewed one up into the air off Axar Patel, with Shreyas Iyer taking an excellent catch.
Crawley’s 78-ball 76 gave England a platform and a good chance of getting back into the match in reply to India’s 396 all out.
But Jasprit Bumrah has turned the momentum firmly in India's favour with a brilliant spell of bowling, getting swing and reverse.
Joe Root was the first to fall victim to Bumrah’s brilliance, edging behind after scoring just 5 runs.
And the ball of the day, the match, and possibly the series saw Bumrah clean up Ollie Pope with a gem of a yorker that tied England’s number three up in knots.
Jonny Bairstow and Ben Stokes will resume with England on 155-4, trailing by 241.

Classic Stokes. He’s barely played a shot since coming in, but sweeps the final ball of the session away to the boundary with the field up.
It’s been India’s session, no doubt about it.

You can only bowl Bumrah for so long, and he’s off the field now, replaced by Mukesh. The possibility of the ball swinging both ways is why India felt he was worth a go in this game instead of Siraj, so it’s exactly the sort of situation that Mukesh would have wanted to be bowling in.
He’s good, but he doesn’t have the intimidation factor of the brilliant Bumrah and Bairstow opens up his arms to cut him away for four.
It’s fair to say that Kevin Pietersen on commentary isn’t impressed with what he’s seen from that Mukesh over.
England 143-4 (Bairstow 16, Stokes 1) India: 396 Overs: 31
Bairstow’s eyes light up as Kuldeep drags one short, and he cuts it away for four to relieve some pressure.
England 138-4 (Bairstow 11, Stokes 1) India: 396 Overs: 30
After the first Test it was interesting to hear just how amazing Mark Wood was by Bumrah’s performance, having thrown is all at the Hyderabad pitch to no avail. The England quick could barely believe what Bumrah had been able to do in that match, and he’s at it again in Vizag.
Bumrah at his best takes the pitch out of the equation, and when you add in a ball that’s swinging and reversing then facing him is as big a test as there is in the sport.
England are clinging on and Stokes survives a maiden.
England 138-4 (Bairstow 11, Stokes 1) India: 396 Overs: 29
Axar gets through another over, but almost everybody in the ground is just waiting for another part in the Bumrah show.
WICKET! England 136-4 (Bairstow 10, Stokes 0) India: 396 Overs: 28
Ollie Pope bowled by Jasprit Bumrah for 23 (55b)
Bumrah has England on the ropes and he cleans up Pope with an absolute beauty. A gorgeous yorker is too good for the England number three and it dismantles the stumps, crashing into the base of middle and leg.
India’s x-factor bowler has turned this innings on its head, and England are in big trouble now.
Ben Stokes is the new batter and watches his first ball through to the keeper, but what a performance this is from Bumrah. There’s no bowler in world cricket you’d rather have in this sort of situation.
England 134-3 (Pope 21, Bairstow 10) India: 396 Overs: 27
Bairstow goes after Axar, crashing one away for a boundary through backward point.
And he finishes the over with another four, this time driven well to the rope.
Bairstow might as well make hay against the spinners – it’s not going to be a run-fest from the other end with the sort of form Bumrah’s in right now.

Joe Root caught by Shubman Gill bowled Jasprit Bumrah for 5 (10b)
It’s a big challenge for England right now, with Bumrah getting the ball to reverse. It’s been a great start to the innings for England, thanks to Crawley’s fast start, but this is a tricky spell.
And the wicket does indeed come as a bit of Bumrah magic draws the edge from Root that flies through to slip. Root is furious that he’s fallen into the trap, but it’s terrific bowling.
Bairstow is targeted with an inswinging yorker first up that looks to be drifting down leg.

Axar continues, and England work him for four runs in the over. This feels like a significant period in the match.
England 119-2 (Pope 18, Root 4) India: 396 Overs: 24
That wicket has prompted India to bring Bumrah straight back into the attack to try and target Pope and Root. The ball is reversing a tad too, so it’s a good move from Rohit.
Pope survives a testing over, getting a single off the last ball to keep the strike.
WICKET! England 118-2 (Pope 17, Root 4) India: 396 Overs: 23
Zak Crawley caught by Shreyas Iyer bowled Axar Patel for 76 (78b)
Axar Patel comes into the attack for the first time, bowling straight after drinks. And Crawley isn’t about to give him time to settle, whipping him away for a lofted four.
However, that aggressive intent is Crawley’s undoing in the end, as he dances down the track and miscues one into the air. It’s a tricky catch, but Iyer does brilliantly to hang on to it and India have their second wicket.
Crawley departs for a lively 76, having scored 61 off just 50 deliveries since the lunch break.
Joe Root is the new batter and he gets off the mark second ball with a reverse sweep for four.
England 110-1 (Crawley 72, Pope 17) India: 396 Overs: 22
Interesting from Rohit, who goes looking for reverse swing with a ball that’s been banged up a bit at the start of this innings.
Mukesh comes back into the attack and he does immediately get a bit of movement, bringing one back in to Pope that elicits an optimistic appeal for a ball that was heading down leg.
Another hooping in-swinger drifts onto the pads and Pope puts it away to the rope to bring up England’s second fifty partnership of the innings.
It’s time for drinks.
England 106-1 (Crawley 72, Pope 13) India: 396 Overs: 21
Kuldeep gets through another decent over that goes for just the one run.
England 105-1 (Crawley 72, Pope 12) India: 396 Overs: 20
A bit of theatre from Ashwin as he delays the start of the over to have a long chat with his skipper and attempt to break up England’s flow by asking for a ball change. It’s not forthcoming from the umpires.
A trademark Crawley drive through the covers brings up England’s 100. They’ve scored at more than five-an-over at the start of this innings, and India have got their first real taste of Bazball batting.
Crawley is playing so well here and he finishes the over with another boundary, cut away for four. “Four more to the England” comes the refrain from the Barmy Army.

Good again from Kuldeep, but England work him for four singles in the over to keep the score ticking over.
England 91-1 (Crawley 60, Pope 10) India: 396 Overs: 18
Ashwin is going to be a real test on this wicket, particularly in the fourth innings (if the game gets that far). He has Pope in trouble with a lovely delivery that drifts and turns, bouncing through the batter’s defences but through to the keeper.
Pope pulls out the reverse sweep, but the ball stays low and he under-edges it into his pads. That’s maybe why we haven’t seen the reverse much from England today.
Crawley faces the last ball of the over, and he gives it the treatment, winding up with a slog sweep that flies all the way for a maximum.

Nice from Kuldeep, who has Pope podding and poking through the over. He gets a single off the last ball and Ashwin will have another crack at England’s restless number three.

Better from Pope, who drives beautifully through the covers for four. He gives Ashwin a bit of hope with a cut that stays in the air for a while, but earns him a run in any case thanks to a misfield from Iyer.
The fielder is then trolled by the Barmy Army trumpet who rolls out the circus music (the Entrance of the Gladiators for those classical music aficionados amongst you).

You’d never think that this Ollie Pope was the batter who demolished India in the last Test. He looks in all sorts of bother against Ashwin, inside edging for a single and then lunging at one that zips past his outside edge.
The encouraging thing for Pope is that this is exactly how he started his knock of 196. If he can get through these early scares then he’ll settle down.
FIFTY! England 72-1 (Crawley 50, Pope 1) India: 396 Overs: 13
Such aggression from Crawley, who times a drive amazingly to send it away for four, and then slog sweeps Kuldeep to bring up his 50 off just 51 deliveries.
This is classic Bazball batting from the big opener.
England 62-1 (Crawley 40, Pope 1) India: 396 Overs: 12
Ashwin beats the edge of Pope, who is frenetic here at the start of his innings. The over goes for three singles and Crawley will be on strike for the next over, hopefully giving Pope a bit of time to settle down.

Ben Duckett caught by Rajat Patidar bowled Kuldeep Yadav for 21 (17b)
Kuldeep is into the attack, and he strikes to remove Duckett with a beautiful delivery that dips on the left-hander and catches the shoulder of the bat to loop up to silly point.
He’s such a good bowler, Kuldeep. It’s his misfortune to be a left-arm spinner in the era of Ravi Jadeja… but he’s got the opportunity to show how good he is in this Test.
And he very nearly gets Pope first ball, as Bharat can’t take cleanly to pull off a stumping, with Pope overbalancing. He was out of his ground there, the England batter, and it was a ‘straightforward stumping chance’ according to Dinesh Karthik over on TNT Sports 2.
England 59-0 (Crawley 38, Duckett 20) India: 396 Overs: 10
Crawley is living dangerously, as a very fine flick fizzes past a statuesque short leg. That was perhaps a chance off Ashwin, but it races away for four to add to England’s score.
England 54-0 (Crawley 34, Duckett 20) India: 396 Overs: 9
Astonishing batting from Crawley brings up the 50 partnership inside nine overs. He takes on Bumrah in dismissive fashion hitting him for three consecutive boundaries to start the over.
The first is a beauty of a whip through midwicket, which is followed up by a slightly risky thick edge that runs away for four. And he finishes up the run with the pick of the lot – a beautiful drive straight back past the bowler.
Crawley finishes the over in style with another drive down the ground. 16 runs come from Bumrah’s over… which isn’t something that’s been said often in Test cricket!
DROP! England 38-0 (Crawley 18, Duckett 20) India: 396 Overs: 8
This session is going to be fascinating. How will England approach their first-innings reply? Can India’s talented spinners get more out of the pitch than England’s youngsters did?
The turning that Ashwin got before lunch persuades Rohit that it’s a good idea to go straight to his senior spinner at the start of the afternoon session, and he very nearly takes a wicket first up.
Crawley charges at Ashwin and flicks the ball just to the left of Gill at midwicket, who can’t hold on to that catch. That would have been an excellent grab, but it's a chance.
England 34-0 (Crawley 16, Duckett 18) India: 396 Overs: 7
Bumrah is back into the attack after lunch and he proves away at the England openers.
He shows of his superb slower ball midway through the over, but Crawley spots it.
Two singles come from the over.

The story of the first session
England reach lunch on 32-0, trailing India (396) by 364 runs
It’s been England’s morning in Vizag, with James Anderson taking two wickets with the new ball to ensure India didn’t cause too much damage at the start of this second day.
And openers Ben Duckett and Zak Crawley have got off to a typically fast start, offering a few chances but reaching lunch on 32-0, surviving a couple of overs of spin before the interval that saw the pitch behave a little unevenly.
The 41-year-old Anderson removed Ravichandran Ashwin for 20 with a classic delivery that left the right-hander a touch, taking the edge through to Ben Foakes.
And it was Anderson who finally ended Yashasvi Jaiswal’s masterful innings, as the youngster player perhaps the first poor shot of his knock to hole out to Jonny Bairstow in the deep.
Jaiswal departed for 209 having reached the first double hundred of his fledgling career with back-to-back boundaries off Shoaib Bashir, shifting up through the gears immediately after Ashwin’s wicket.
And the 22-year-old celebrated in style, raising both his arms to the crowd after a double ton of the sort of quality that suggests his Test career will last a very long time.
India’s tail enders didn’t hang around long, with Jasprit Bumrah edging to slip off Rehan Ahmed for 6 and Mukesh Kumar departing in similar fashion without troubling the scorers.
India managed to add 60 runs in the morning session for those final four wickets, finishing on 396 all out.
Anderson finished with incredible figures of 3-47 from his 25 overs, with an economy rate of just 1.88 in an innings where India scored at almost double that.
Bashir ended his first innings in Test cricket with 3-138 from 38 overs, having bowled more than double the number of overs as the next most used spinner, Tom Hartley (1-74 from 18).
And Rehan took 3-65 from 17 overs having done his job in the back half of the innings. Joe Root was the only bowler not to take a wicket, going for 71 runs from 14 expensive overs.

Ravichandran Ashwin can barely contain his glee at getting an over before lunch, and he’s got Crawley in his sights.
He gets one to turn and bounce, striking Crawley outside the line on the pad that somehow evades everything else as it loops up. And Crawley gratefully accepts the single to take England to lunch on 32 without loss.
England 31-0 (Crawley 14, Duckett 17) India: 396 Overs: 5
We’re going to see a bit of spin before lunch, with Kuldeep Yadav given a go by Rohit Sharma.
England won’t be happy to see the second ball of the over keep extremely low and skid through to Crawley, who does well to squirt it away for two runs.
We didn’t see much of that sort of thing from the pitch from England’s bowlers, but if India’s three-pronged spin attack get uneven bounce then it’s going to be a huge test in the afternoon session.
Crawley gets a single off the last ball of the over, so will have strike for what will certainly be the last over before the interval.
England 29-0 (Crawley 11, Duckett 17) India: 396 Overs: 4
Lunch isn’t far away, but England approach that as an opportunity rather than a risk, and Duckett targets Mukesh with two hammered fours through the covers.
That’s serious intent from the left-hander, and he finishes the over with a third four, once again dispatching a ball just short of a length to the rope through the on side.
If India didn’t know what they were going to come up against in this England batting line-up on a decent surface then they certainly do now. 12 runs come from the over.
England 16-0 (Crawley 11, Duckett 5) India: 396 Overs: 3
Is that an intentional late cut? Perhaps, or maybe it’s a thick edge that Crawley manages to style out. Either way the ball races past gully to the boundary as Bumrah goes for his first runs of the day.
England 10-0 (Crawley 5, Duckett 5) India: 396 Overs: 2
Ben Duckett starts the over with a chop of a shot off Mukesh Kumar that he inside edges just past his stumps and away for four. That’s a streaky way to start his innings!
But you know what you’re going to get from England’s openers, if you’re not Bumrah at least, and Crawley eases Mukesh away for a dismissive four midway through the over to get the first intentional boundary of the innings on the board.
England 0-0 (Crawley 0, Duckett 0) India: 396 Overs: 1
There is no shock that it’s Jasprit Bumrah who starts the innings with the new ball. He was so good in Hyderabad on a pitch that offered nothing for the seamers, and England’s openers need to be wary.
Bumrah starts with a maiden that ends with a real waft from Zak Crawley that has India interested in the possibility of an edge.
A big test for Bazball
This innings will decide how the rest of the match unfolds. Can England get close to India’s total and make this a one-innings game on a surface that is expected to break up significantly later in the Test?
Or will the brilliance of India’s attack, spearheaded by Bumrah and the spin trio of Ashwin, Axar and Kudeep, remind England of the realities of touring this country.
It’s going to be fascinating.

Root snaffles a decent catch at slip as Mukesh lives up to his billing as a bit of a bunny at number eleven, edging Bashir off the last ball of the over, and that’s the end of India’s innings.
Bashir finishes with 3-138 from his 38 overs, and India are all out for 396.
That’s a good score, there’s no doubt about it, and puts scoreboard pressure on England. But India would have been hoping for more than that after winning the toss.
Is the surface really as flat as it’s looked, or has Jaiswal taken us all for fools by making his double hundred look so comfortable? We’ll soon find out when England come out to bat.

Jasprit Bumrah caught by Joe Root bowled Rehan Ahmed for 6 (9b)
England make the decision not to bowl their 41-year-old pacer into the ground and turn to the x-factor of Rehan to try and get rid of the tail.
He starts with a loosener that Bumrah happily puts away through midwicket for four.
But Rehan gets Bumrah as he fires one in and gets an edge that flies straight into the hands of Root at slip. England are one wicket away from wrapping this innings up, which is a terrific achievement on this pitch.
India 391-8 (Kuldeep 7, Bumrah 2) Overs: 110
It’s another over for Bashir, who really races through his overs, helping England with their uncharacteristically high over rate in this game.
Kuldeep gets back for a quick second midway through the over, but he can’t get a single off the last ball so Bumrah will be on strike for the next over. Can England wrap this up quickly?
India 389-8 (Kuldeep 5, Bumrah 2) Overs: 109
Anderson is frustrated as Bumrah knocks the first ball of the over away for a single, but he gets the opportunity to have a run at Kuldeep, and he has him beaten all ends up with two stunning deliveries at the end of the over.
Kuldeep manages to keep the strike.
India 387-8 (Kuldeep 4, Bumrah 1) Overs: 108
Bumrah is the new batter, and he’s not the best with the bat, that’s for sure.
He and Kuldeep survive Bashir’s latest over, but the new batter will be on strike for the next over and Anderson is already on the way to take the ball.

Yashasvi Jaiswal caught by Jonny Bairstow bowled James Anderson for 209 (290b)
Jaiswal’s vigil finally comes to an end and the England players rush into the middle to shake his hand after a knock that could well have won India this Test. Let’s see how the next few days unfold.
He finally loses his patience and makes a mistake against Anderson, switching his stance and swiping a big shot into the deep off Anderson and Bairstow makes no mistake with the catch.
He departs for 209 from 290 balls – a masterclass of innings that featured 26 boundaries, including seven maximums. He’s been a dominant force in this first innings.
It’s a wicket maiden for Anderson. Of course it is. He’s been so good in this innings.
India 383-7 (Jaiswal 209, Kuldeep 1) Overs: 106
Bashir continues and offers up a half volley off the first ball of the over that Jaiswal can only get away for a single.
He’s happy to give strike to Kuldeep, who is happy enough to defend his way through the over for no runs, with plenty of men up in catching positions.
Bashir think he’s got Kuldeep on the last ball with a big appeal for an lbw, but England opt against the appeal.
India 382-7 (Jaiswal 208, Kuldeep 1) Overs: 105
So good from Anderson, who bowls within himself with Jaiswal on strike, keeping the ball in the channel knowing that Jaiswal is happy to see him out.
The set batter takes the single to leave Kuldeep with two deliveries to face, and England’s whole approach changes, with three slips in and Anderson cranking up the pace. There’s a long chat with Stokes at the end of the over – could that be the end of Jimmy’s session?

It’s a maiden for Bashir as Kuldeep plays him out. It’s all about giving support to Jaiswal here for India’s tail.

Kuldeep is struck on the pad and it looks good, but Stokes opts against the review and replays show it was heading down leg. Wise.

What a way to bring up your double hundred! Jaiswal sweeps Bashir for a huge six off his first ball of the over. And a full toss follows with Jaiswal two short of his double ton, and he dispatches it for four.
He celebrates in style, and this has been an extraordinary knock, a confirmation of his extreme talent for anyone who wasn’t already convinced.

Ravichandran Ashwin caught by Ben Foakes bowled James Anderson for 20 (37b)
Anderson’s brilliant spell here gets its reward. He gets a wobble seam to square up Ashwin, who can only edge behind to Foakes for a straightforward catch.
That’s the opening that England have been searching for.

Here we go, Jaiswal has a crack at Bashir, lofting a shot over mid-on and over the rope for six. Is that the signal that we’re going to get some attacking approach from the centurion?
India 352-6 (Jaiswal 184, Ashwin 15) Overs: 99
Anderson is bowling so well here, and he almost bags the key wicket of Jaiswal as the ball smacks into the pads.
England review, and it’s close, but DRS says the ball was going of the top and England lose a review.
Jaiswal manages to get off strike next ball with a squirt of an inside edge and Ashwin survives the rest of the over.
India 351-6 (Jaiswal 183, Ashwin 15) Overs: 98
Ashwin can really bat and he draws oohs from the crowd as he drives Bashir through the gap in the covers and away for four.
India 346-6 (Jaiswal 182, Ashwin 11) Overs: 97
It’s so hard to take runs off Anderson when he’s in this sort of mood.
He squares Jaiswal up with a wobble-seamer that nips past the outside edge. Two runs come off the over, including a leg bye.
India 344-6 (Jaiswal 181, Ashwin 11) Overs: 96
Bashir gets a go with the new ball too, after his impressive start to his Test career. It’s a nice over, but India get through it relatively comfortably, picking up one single with a nudge of the pads by Ashwin.
India 343-6 (Jaiswal 181, Ashwin 10) Overs: 95
It’s Anderson’s first over of the day, and England do indeed take the new ball. This is going to be a crucial spell of the game.
He starts with two absolute beauties, beating Jaiswal with a big inswinger and then catch the edge that drops short of second slip.
India survive the first over with the new ball, but the ball is talking for Anderson.
India 341-6 (Jaiswal 180, Ashwin 9) Overs: 94
No new ball straight away for England, with Shoaib Bashir taking the first over of the day.
Ravichandran Ashwin dispatches him beautifully for four to start the day in style for India.

03:50 – How is the pitch expected to play?
The surface looked really flat on day one, with the common consensus being that it’s likely to remain that way until day three, before breaking up significantly in the back-half of the Test.
That means first-innings runs are likely to be key. England will be hoping to rattle through India quickly this morning, and they have a new ball available to help them with that. But even if they do that, scoring 350+ against this India attack will be no easy feat, even if the surface is more friendly that it was in Hyderabad.
It’s going to be a really interesting day.

India were in a good position on 336-6 after the first day in Vizag, but they could have been in a great position.
Having won the toss and batted first on a good surface, and with their young opener Jaiswal scoring a sublime 179*, India will feel like they should have buried England on day one.
But they’ve left the door ajar, with no other batter going past 34 on a flat pitch, and it’ll be fascinating to see if England can respond today.
