And we are on the ascent of Monte Grappa…

Tom Dumoulin and a posse of Team Sunweb riders are just off the front of the peloton, with Movistar still setting the pace.

Andreetta and Muhlberger, who were formed a two-man chasing pack of the six further up the road, have been swallowed up by the pack. The peloton are eight minutes back as we approach the first immediate sprint.

Movistar setting the pace at the head of the peloton – the big question is how does Tom Dumoulin feel? He was running on empty towards the end of yesterday’s stage.

We are already 69km in - and have a break of six riders up the road, with Mathieu Ladagnous leading the way. The maglia rosa group are some 06:43 back.

Tom Dumoulin trails Nairo Quintana by 38 seconds in the GC, and with the Dutchman looking to limit his losses, expect fireworks in this thrilling 100th edition of the Giro.

Right so, ahead of tomorrow’s time trial, today represents the final mountain showdown – a 190km ride from Pordenone to Asiago which features the gruelling Monte Grappa and the twisting, steep climb to Forza ahead of a 15km rolling plateau to the finish.
