The two leaders have 25 seconds on the rest of the break, which is about to be swept up by the peloton. It's been a crazy opening 55km with still nothing decided on the road. After the intermediate sprint there are two climbs and so we can expect a complete shake up again. With that in mind, this could be a good spring board for Atapuma.

Marco Frapporti (Androni Giocattoli) and Darwin Atapuma (UAE Team Emirates) have attacked the break. The Italian, who is the most attacking rider of this Giro, no doubt has his eyes on the intermediate sprint prize at Vestone coming right up.

Bora and QuickStep both have two riders in this large break - good insurance should things not come back together for their respective sprinters Bennett and Viviani.

The riders are currently zipping along the banks of the Lago d'Idro, a smaller lake located a few hundred metres higher and to the west of Lake Garda. Our three leaders have almost been caught by the large chase group. They have 30 seconds on the pack with a couple of riders stuck in between.

The peloton is coming back together - although it's really strung out and still very nervous. The three leaders have about 20 riders in pursuit, including most of that initial break, who were joined by some others - including a couple of UAE Team Emirates riders, who had missed the initial move. Maybe things will calm down now after a frantic start.

Pozzovivo and Pinot also appear to be in this main pink jersey group, but yesterday's winner Rohan Dennis is another who had missed the split, alongside Froome and Lopez.

Three riders from the initial break have ridden clear as the chasing pack closed in. They are Jauregui, Cattaneo and Neilands and they have about 25 seconds over the pink jersey group, with Villella leading the chase with a few others. The rest of the peloton is still fighting back around 25 seconds further back. Chaos!

Simon Yates and Tom Dumoulin are in the main pack - as are Bennett and Viviani. So the pink and ciclamen jersey rivals are all correct and present. By 'main' pack, what I mean is a very reduced peloton - because the majority of it is indeed further back down the road. So it's all happening here.

SPLIT IN THE PACK: The peloton has split into two or three groups on this descent and many riders appear to have been caught out - including Chris Froome and Miguel Angel Lopez...

The gap is coming down for this break, which only has 15 seconds to play with now.

CLOSE SHAVE: Salvatore Puccio misjudges a corner on the descent and is forced to ride over the grass verge before rejoining the road.

We're now onto a fast downhill after the road peaked out following the top of that initial climb. The gap is down to 38 seconds for the leaders, who are being given no headway by UAE (who missed the break) and Bora (who want to ensure today's finish comes down to a sprint - for their man Sam Bennett).

Very confusing situation here because it appears that Viviani is in the main pack despite Bora's pacing on the front. What's more, Fabio Aru has come to the front for a huge pull. Yesterday the Italian champion put in an uncharacteristically huge effort in the time trial - although he was later docked 20 seconds for drafting a race motorcycle. And now he's being a breakaway-killer for UAE Team Emirates.

The break are: Luis Leon Sanchez (Astana), Davide Villella (Astana), David de la Cruz (Team Sky), Salvatore Puccio (Team Sky), Matteo Cattaneo (Androni Giocattoli), Francesco Gavazzi (Androni Giocattoli), Giovanni Visconti (Bahrain-Merida), Alessandro De Marchi (BMC), Sebastien Reichenbach (Groupama-FDJ), Quentin Jauregui (AG2R La Mondiale), Ruben Fernandez (Movistar), Nathan Brown (EF-Drapac), Krists Neilands (Israel Cycling Academy) and Giulio Ciccone (Bardiani CSF). The gap is around 45 seconds.

Bora-Hansgrohe have five riders on the front of the peloton - and perhaps that means Elia Viviani was dropped on that climb. We can't see the maglia ciclamino in the reduced pack, so that wouldn't be impossible. That would put Sam Bennett in the driving seat for a hat-trick of wins and near-parity in the battle for the points classification.

UAE Team Emirates are leading the chase on the front of the pack as the gap stretches out to 30 seconds in this break, which also includes two Sky riders in Puccio and David de la Cruz.

There's been a bit of a shake-up going over the summit of the climb. Some of the deadweight from the break have been cast off and we have some fresh blood in Alessandro De Marchi (BMC), Seb Reichenback (Groupama-FDJ) and Gio Visconti (Bahrain Merida).

Sanchez is not pleased as the gap comes down... It's worth noting that Villella is riding on his home roads today, hence his attempt to breakaway with team-mate Sanchez. But without any help from the other escapees, the two have been left rather frustrated.

Sanchez and Villella are really motoring along as they approach the summit of this first climb at Molina di Ledro. But they're not making too much headway despite Carthy really struggling to keep in touch.

We have a dozen riders with a small gap now - including two from Astana and one Sky rider, possibly Salvatore Puccio. Luis Leon Sanchez and Davide Villella are the Astana riders, while Hugh Carthy is there for EF, Ciccone too. But there's a lot of agitation behind and this move may not stick.
