Rohan Dennis has reportedly been arrested and charged with causing death by dangerous driving after his wife, former world champion Melissa Hoskins, was killed in a car crash.
Hoskins died from her injuries in hospital after the incident in Adelaide's inner-north on Saturday. She was 32.
"Major Crash officers attended the scene along with detectives from Eastern District CIB to examine the circumstances surrounding the incident,” the police said on Sunday.
"Following an investigation, a 33-year-old Medindie man has been arrested and charged with causing death by dangerous driving, driving without due care and endangering life."
According to widespread reports in Australian media, Dennis was the man arrested by South Australian Police before being released on bail.
Hoskins won gold in the team pursuit at the 2015 Track Cycling World Championships – breaking the world record in the process – one of five global medals she won across a distinguished career. She also competed twice at the Olympics, narrowly missing out on a medal at London 2012.
She married Dennis in 2018 and the couple had two children together.
The Australian Olympic Committee confirmed Hoskins' death on social media on Monday.
"The AOC has expressed the utmost sadness at the loss of Olympic cyclist Melissa Hoskins after the tragic events in Adelaide," a statement read.
"Our condolences go to Melissa's family, friends and the cycling community at this extremely difficult time."
Anna Meares, the Olympic gold medallist who was a team-mate of Hoskins' at the London 2012 and Rio 2016 Olympic Games, said: "I have a very heavy heart. My thoughts are with their children, family and fellow friends. This is a very difficult and tragic time. RIP Melissa Hoskins."
CPA Women, the global association of women cyclists, said in a statement: "Shocked by the news of Melissa Hoskins' death, we send our thoughts to those who love her, starting with her children, and were lucky enough to ride with her during an all too short life."
Dennis is one of the biggest names on the men's road circuit, having twice won the world time trial title and clinched stage victories at all three Grand Tours.
He will reportedly appear at Adelaide Magistrates Court on March 13.
