Another huge result for BMC: Dylan Teuns, the Belgian, homes home two seconds down on the summit for fourth place. He was five seconds down at the first check and so rode that one pretty consistently. It goes to show what a strong TT outfit BMC are; shame there isn't a TTT for them, really. That's two in the top five so far for BMC and Dennis still yet to ride.

Australian Damian Howson (Mitchelton-Scott) went through the first check seven seconds down and has just come home nine seconds down on Van Baarle for the 10th best time for now.

According to his BMC team-mate Alessandro De Marchi - currently second fastest at the finish - Rohan Dennis will be the man to beat today: "I expected to do good because Marco Pinotti (sports director for BMC) is the best advisor in the world for this. I’m happy with my time. Eight kilometres, it’s a short distance for me. But it’s perfect for Rohan Dennis. He likes the course. He clearly is the favourite."

Very flat and shiny finish straight today - it's lucky it's not raining or it could be carnage!

He finished 65th in last year's Vuelta but 15th in last year's Tour de France. What will it be this year for the German in this, his first Grand Tour of the season...?

Of the favourites and outsiders for this Vuelta crown, the next riders to leave the start ramp are Emanuel Buchmann (Bora Hansgrohe) at 18:06 (in one minute, in fact), his team-mate Rafal Majka at 18:28 and Ilnur Zakarin (Katusha-Alpecin) at 18:33.

Team Sky's Sergio Henao is currently on the little climb in this otherwise pan-flat 8km TT. According to his team-mate Van Baarle, who is currently leading, today's course is perfect for Sky's Michal Kwiatkowski: "I felt really good and I’m very happy. Obviously I wanted to do a good TT. It’s a good course, on a Grand Tour, which always brings some extra-motivation, and I’m the national champion. The team has very good material and everyone is feeling great to do great today. The course suits many guys in the team and I think it’s perfect for a rider like Kwiatkowski. He showed at the Dauphiné he was very strong in prologues. It’s better for him than De La Cruz, but De La Cruz is also very strong and they’ll both finish in the top 10 for sure." (Quote courtesy of lavuelta.com)

Frenchman Thibaut Pinot is on course now. He has something to prove after withdrawing from the Giro with pneumonia after cracking on the penultimate day when sitting pretty in third place. Pinot has signed on for two more years at Groupama-FDJ. And he's included in our riders-to-watch video here...

Richie Porte spoke to reporters after his troubled start today and it's not good news for the Australian. According to lavuelta.com Porte said: "It’s nice to start the race. I guess tomorrow is the big test to see how I am. Leading into a Grand Tour is always stressful, sitting around and not training properly. Also, I was sick for a couple of weeks. I hasn’t been ideal. We’ll see. It’s a pretty straight forward course, just a couple of corners where you have to be careful, the climbs are nothing to worry about. It should be a great course, hopefully a Rohan Dennis course. I felt absolutely awful to be honest, and I think that’s how it’s going to be. It’s been really disappointing. I look forward to putting on the form for the World Championships in this race."

No changes at the intermediate check with Alex Edmondson's time still the one to beat. And Pavel Sivakov comes home at the finish 12 seconds down at the finish - not a bad effort for the Russian from Sky.

Dutch veteran Bauke Mollema comes home seven seconds down on compatriot Van Baarle. The Trek-Segafredo rider says he's not riding for GC in Spain just for stage wins. Time will tell but that's a solid start for the 31-year-old.

Talking of Sky, we have Pavel Sivakov of Russia on the course now. The 21-year-old is making his Grand Tour debit and he's been tipped as a future stage race winner in the making. Will he and fellow debutant Tao Geoghegan Hart make as big an impression in Spain for Sky as Egan Bernal did in the Tour?

Third best time currently for Felline, who has had a difficult season with zero wins and a constant battle with illness.

CLOSE! And Italy's Alessandro De Marchi (BMC) comes one second within the top spot. A nice effort from the Italian powerhouse. He went through the second check three seconds down on Edmondson and then came over the line one second down on Van Baarle.

My apologies, I earlier said that Langeveld was level with time with Van Baarle - there are clearly some teething problems with the official timings because that has been ammended, with Langeveld five seconds down in fourth currently.
