Hello and welcome to Eurosport's live commentary from the Champions League play-off first leg fixture between Manchester United and Club Brugge. This is Nick Royle (@nickaroyle) taking you through all the action from Old Trafford.

Smalling bundles Bolingoli off the ball down the left to win a free-kick. The England defender looks in confident form tonight - former United team-mate Michael Owen says Smalling has great upper-body strength and is very difficult to play against.

Boos from the United crowd as Januzaj is penalised for a foul - he gets a stern telling-of from referee Aytekin as well.

Mata's first-time ball finds Januzaj in the box and the referee decides that the young Belgian fouls Duarte - it actually looked the other way round and a foul by the Brugge defender.

CHANCE: Two chances in a minute for Rooney - his scissor kick is cleared off the post by Vazquez, then from the second corner, he cannot angle a header from Mata's corner on goal.

Yellow card for Bolingoli for a foul on Januzaj.

Tour Dierckx is put through down the right but Smalling does well to concede the corner. Cools loses Shaw from the set-piece but angles his effort straight at Romero.

Mata tries a through ball towards Rooney but the ball gathers pace and Bruzzese is able to allow the ball to roll out of play.

Memphis breaks down the left and finds Mata down the right channel but Rooney does not read the Spaniard's chip into the Brugge area.

Matteo Darmian breaks down the right but Laurens De Bock is over smartly to block for Brugge.

Celebrations - and some relief - for the United players after Memphis' goal.

Another expansive pass from Carrick towards Memphis is cut out by a stretching Cools.

Rooney, who has not scored in his last eight games, has been subdued so far.

United are attacking again down the left as the Stretford End start to find their voice.

Apologies - the flick was over Dion Cools' head - Cools as you like.

That was a fine goal from the Dutchman, and a great response from Carrick.

GOAL: Manchester United 1-1 Club Brugge. Memphis nets his first goal for Manchester United as he takes down a sumptuous Carrick pass, flicks the ball over Cools and shoots home.

Carrick has had a poor start - given his reputation for technical excellence.

Carrick appeals to the German referee Deniz Aytekin after he is penalised for a studs-showing challenge. The Brugge fans start singing about Anderlecht...

There is shock across Old Trafford apart from the 3,000 Brugge fans in the right-hand corner.

GOAL: Manchester United 0-1 Club Brugge. Vazquez's low free-kick into the area deflects off first the wall and then Carrick and past Romero and into the United net.

Smalling shows good upper body strength to bundle Abdoulay Diaby off the ball down the right. He then sends the ball into touch when clearing it.
