Van Gaal says his team head into the first-leg at Old Trafford high on confidence after 1-0 Premier League wins over Tottenham and Aston Villa. "I think when you win two times then you shall have a lot of confidence. But every match is difficult and Belgian teams can play very compactly, they can defend and a team always has a chance of winning,” he said.

Club Brugge's Vazquez was coming through the youth ranks at Barca when van Gaal was first-team coach at the Camp Nou between 1997 and 2000. "I met him in Barcelona. I was young, maybe 11 or 12 years old but my impression was that he was a really hard coach with a lot of character and personality, just like he is now,” he said.

United missed out on qualification for the competition in 2014-15 for the first time in 19 years after finishing seventh in the Premier League in David Moyes' sole season in charge.

"We need experience and we can't lose the ball unnecessarily. In the last two matches we are too easily losing the ball," he told BT Sport. "I think the team selection has it in them to get the win tonight, we know that it may take more then that though."
