Hello and welcome to Eurosport's live commentary from the Champions League play-off first leg fixture between Manchester United and Club Brugge. This is Nick Royle (@nickaroyle) taking you through all the action from Old Trafford.

Smalling shows good upper body strength to bundle Abdoulay Diaby off the ball down the right. He then sends the ball into touch when clearing it.

Smalling brings the ball out of defence and sets up Rooney down the right, but that means there is no-one in the area and Bruzzese is out sharply to field the low cross.

United build down the left through Shaw and Januzaj, but the young Belgian messes up his cross from the left touchline.

Januzaj breaks down the left and finds Memphis, but the Dutchman's shot deflects off a black shirt and loops up into the arms of Bruzzese.

Romero clears after a quick break down the left following a surge through the centre from Vazquez.

CHANCE: Oscar Duarte loses the ball in midfield and Mata feeds Januzaj down the right but his cross just evades Rooney in the area.

United kick off from left to right, in their usual red shirts and white shirts and socks. Club Brugge are all in black.

The warm-ups have been completed - and now the teams are in the tunnel. A big hug for Memphis from Sergio Romero. Van Gaal gives late instructions to Rooney.

Van Gaal says his team head into the first-leg at Old Trafford high on confidence after 1-0 Premier League wins over Tottenham and Aston Villa. "I think when you win two times then you shall have a lot of confidence. But every match is difficult and Belgian teams can play very compactly, they can defend and a team always has a chance of winning,” he said.

Club Brugge's Vazquez was coming through the youth ranks at Barca when van Gaal was first-team coach at the Camp Nou between 1997 and 2000. "I met him in Barcelona. I was young, maybe 11 or 12 years old but my impression was that he was a really hard coach with a lot of character and personality, just like he is now,” he said.

Interestingly, 64-year-old Van Gaal has been talking about life after United in his programme notes.

United missed out on qualification for the competition in 2014-15 for the first time in 19 years after finishing seventh in the Premier League in David Moyes' sole season in charge.

"We need experience and we can't lose the ball unnecessarily. In the last two matches we are too easily losing the ball," he told BT Sport. "I think the team selection has it in them to get the win tonight, we know that it may take more then that though."

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal says the "pressure is high" for the Premier League side to qualify for the Champions League group stages.

The Belgians go into the first leg at Old Trafford with 10 players injured, including Israeli midfielder Lior Refaelov, who netted 18 goals last season, and Colombian winger Jose Izquierdo, who was the club's top scorer in the Belgian Pro league with 13 goals,

The Belgians beat Panathinaikos 4-1 on aggregate to qualify for the play-off round earlier this month.

Club Brugge's season was arguably derailed by a run to the Europa League quarter-finals which saw them eventually playing a club record 63 matches last season.

Brugge pipped Anderlecht to second place in the Belgian League to earn a place in the Champions League, but missed out on the title to eventual champions Gent.

The tank-like defender Timmy Simons captains Club Brugge, while Sebastien Bruzzese retains his place in goal with the more experienced Sinan Bolat still not yet match fit.

Reigning Belgian player of the year Victor Vazquez, who played youth football at Barcelona with Lionel Messi, Gerard Pique and Cesc Fabregas, starts for Club Brugge.
