Evening all, and eyes down for what should be yet another jazzer. City have run into form - it took longer than it ought to have done, but Pep Guardiola has worked out his best attacking combination - while Monaco know exactly what they're doing, and sport a variety of excellent young players. On top of that, both sides are committed to attack, so we're set.

Lovely touch from Sterling to transfer the ball into his stride, so Bakayoko pulls him back and is booked; free-kick City, wide on the right, 20 yards from the line. De Bruyne and Sane stand behind it...

De Bruyne breaks through midfield and feeds Sane outside him, but his ball doesn't go to stride and City lose momentum.

That was the tie right there; can City punish Monaco for their stupidity? I'd say not.

FALCAO MISSES ANOTHER PENALTY! He stutters and tries to place it towards the bottom left corner, but Caballero hasn't bought the feint and is down to it fast, holding on easily!

Mendy looks a real player, and again he escapes down the left, rinsing over another low cross as Otamendi sleeps - a desperate tackle seems to do just enough to put Falcao off ... BUT THE LINESMAN SAYS PENALTY! Otamendi does rattle the back of Falcao, it just doesn't look bad as he's already committed forward - the decision took a while to come, there'll be criticism, but i thought it was correct.

City pour forward and De Bruyne, who's been quiet, fizzes a ball outside him for Sterling - too excitedly, and it runs into touch.

Leverkusen have pulled a goal back against Atletico.

Apparently Sterling wasn't booked after all, so is still available for the second leg.

Well, I guess we'l have to endure patter about whether or not City should've had a penalty, but the reality is that their defence is the steadier of the two, and that's why they're in front.

Half-time: Manchester City 1-2 Monaco

There shall be no added minutes, despite two goals scored.

In particular, Mbappe is special, though of course he's helped by a team that knows what it's about. And here's another break, Lemar carrying the ball forward and slipping in Falcao, who cues across his shot and sends it spinning into the side-netting.

Monaco are such a fun team: pace, skill, improvisation, attitude - they could beat anyone, basically.

GOAL! Manchester City 1-2 Monaco (Mbappe) Dearie me, and wow! Chip over the top from Fabinho, Otamendi and Stones hang about sword-fighting, so Mbappe skips through, steadies himself, makes a sandwich, and snaps a shot into the roof of the net at the near post. What a finish that was!

Turns out Sterling was booked for protesting the Aguero booking, and he'll miss the second leg

Long goalkick, flick-on, and Mbappe is through! But he's moving away from goal, so forced to swivel into a shot, that flies just over the top of the near post while Caballero dreams of a better life.
