Iceland v Portugal LIVE: Ronaldo scores on his 200th appearance for Portugal

Iceland made history when they qualified for the UEFA European Championships in 2016 for the first time ever. They defied the odds even further by making it to the quarter-finals, knocking out England before losing to France. They failed to qualify for Euro 2020 after losing 2-1 to Hungary in the play-off final.

Iceland have won one of their first three games in Group J – a 7-0 win vs Liechtenstein. Defeats against Bosnia & Herzegovina and Slovakia has Iceland in fifth on three points, A win tonight could see them climb as high as third if other results go their way.

Bruno Fernandes has been Portugal’s main creative outlet in qualifying so far. No player in Euro 2024 qualifying has created more big chances than Bruno Fernandes' 3 and only Slovenia’s Adam Cerin (15) has created more chances than Fernandes (11).

Roberto Martinez’s start to life as Portugal manager could hardly have went any better than it has. Portugal have won all three of their matches without conceding a goal. Portugal beat Liechtenstein 4-0 in their opening match, Luxembourg 6-0 and Bosnia & Herzegovina 3-0 last time out.

The two nations have met on three previous occasions and Iceland are yet to taste victory against the Portuguese. Portugal won the first two meetings (3-1 & 5-3) and the last meeting was a 0-0 draw in the Euro 2016 group stage – a tournament Portugal would later go on to win.

Cristiano Ronaldo is in the starting XI tonight and is set to make his 200th international appearance. He becomes the first player in history to make 200 appearances on the international stage.
