Chelsea re targeting Foyth, and Kovacic spreads a decent ball out to Alonso. He can't make anything of it, but he wanders infield and when Ziyech finds him, he bumps a shot towards the near post, where Asenjo turns away.

Villarreal incur and Foyth slips a decent ball in behind for Dia. But Mendy rushes out to block his shot, and though Pedraza soon crosses from the left, Chalobah is there to see it away.

I know Tuchel is a European champion, but he also has a combover, so.

"Football's so interesting," says Glenn Hoddle in co-commentary. He's right, and few espouse that perspective as enthusiastically as he does.

On the other hand, the way Tuchel celebrated, it looked like the goal came via planned move, and as I type that Alonso tries a similar pass again ... but this time, Foyth is there to see it away.

On the touchline, Unai Emery did his absolute nut watching that goal go in and I'm not surprised. That was not at all like his team.

GOAL! Chelsea 1-0 Villarreal (Ziyech) Alonso swerves a lovely pass down the line, in behind Foyth and Albiol for Havertz running onto it. His cut-back is a good one, and arriving on the burst, Ziyech fiddles a finish against the ground and into the far corner. I've no idea why Villarreal were so high, nor why they had no defenders in the middle.

Pina has numerous bites at Alonso and eventually sinks one, so Hudson-Odoi will curl in a free-kick from on the left touchline.

Alonso puts a ball in behind Foyth for Werner to run onto, but Albiol comes across and not only makes the challenge but wins a goalkick.

Kante is late on Gerard Moreno and, 40 yards out, Trigueros will curl into the box ... miserably.

He's an interesting player, Ziyech. Under Lampard, Chelsea were dry in attack unless he was playing, but the way Tuchel sets them up he's competing for a spot with Havertz and Mount, which us unlikely to work out well for him.

..which Ziyech curls to the near post, only for Gerard Moreno to head clear, and when he gets the ball back, he tries another cross which Asenjo falls upon.

After a bright start, this game is now as dull as I feared, but Pedraza, caught out of position, arrives late for a tackle with Hudson-Odoi and Chelsea now have a chance to stick a ball into the box from out on the right...

I'm not sure Havertz and Ziyech have had a touch between them yet.

Chelsea are back in possession, but they're moving it too slowly.

Villarreal have improved the last few minutes and Gerard Moreno sticks Pina away down the left. He advances then cuts back a pass, but no one's there to receive it.

Pedraza gets forward but Hudson-Odoi is putting it in, chasing back to tackle well.

Villarreal win a corner down the left and Rudiger gets first contact but can only divert the ball square for Albiol ... who totally misses his kick, and everyone laughs.
