Good afternoon and welcome to our live text commentary of Newcastle United’s FA Cup third round tie with Cardiff City, at St. James’ Park.

Today’s referee is Anthony Taylor of Manchester. He’s been in charge of 18 fixtures in all competitions this season, and has shown 65 yellows, three reds, and given seven penalties.

Solskjaer: "I have had a six week break since the Norwegian Cup final and I am eager to get going…. Every game is important. We know how close Cardiff were to lifting the cup a few years ago, so we go in there hoping to go through to the next round. The Premier League is very important but the FA Cup gives us a chance to build momentum.”

Cardiff put up a valiant fight against Arsenal in their last Premier League outing on New Year’s Day, but were undone by two late goals. The new boss should take some heart from that performance, though, and he has been promised funds to bolster his squad in this transfer window.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer takes charge of Cardiff City for the first time after being unveiled as the Bluebirds’ manager on Thursday. The Norwegian has given Mark Hudson, Don Cowie, Aron Gunnarsson and Andreas Cornelius chances to impress, while Peter Odemwingie returns to the side. Craig Noone and Steven Caulker are left on the bench and Gary Medel is rested. Craig Bellamy remains sidelined.

Pardew: “We want to win the game - we want to win every game as Newcastle, and that will never change as long as I am here…it's pretty obvious that this club is in desperate need of a trophy. It's a big, big club that hasn't had a trophy for a long, long time."

Changes have been expected to both sides, but some of Alan Pardew’s have been enforced; Fabricio Coloccini is out for four to six weeks with ligament damage, while Tim Krul and Yohan Cabaye also picked up knocks that see them rested. Debuchy is suspended after his red card. There is a start for Papiss Cisse with Loic Remy left on the bench.

The Magpies were beaten by a late West Brom penalty on New Year’s Day, having battled well in spite of being reduced to ten men after a rash challenge by Mathieu Debuchy on Claudio Yacob.
