United get bored and look to go long, Di Maria lumping it forward from inside his own half. Rooney's in behind, and the flag's down, but he can't stretch far enough to bring it down.

Davies comes in late on Herrera and cleans him out. He has the audacity to protest but, despite having no name or number on his shirt, he goes into the book.

You know what, Preston will be perfectly happy with this so far. United have had more of the ball but that was always going to happen. It's been turgid and unimaginative stuff, though, in the final third.

United are turning the screw but they're not carving out any clear-cut chances yet. Blind puts an aimless chipped ball over which goes straight into Stuckmann's hands. It's not creative enough so far.
33'
Di Maria has the ball on the left but puts a simply awful ball over that sails out for a goal-kick. Louis van Gaal is not impressed. Neither is Bobby Charlton in the stands. Neither's anyone else inside the ground.
31'
Stuckmann comes out confidently to claim when Falcao is looming. He then proceeds to boot a monster of a kick up the field. Kevin Davies is under it and for a moment it feels like Allardyce's Bolton glory days all over again.
30'
Some real pressure now for Preston to soak up as United probe on the edge of the box. It's that man di Maria again who's looking to cause problems, racing past one and threading it through to Falcao. But the Colombian fails to control it on the swivel - he looks a yard off the pace so far.
29'
Herrera sends Valencia away towards the by-line and the Ecuadorian stands up a cross, but Rooney and Fellaini fail to bring it down between them. 'One of you!' I believe is the cry.
28'
It might sound trite but Preston's best chance of grabbing a goal tonight is going to be form a dead-ball situation.
27'
Preston have a free-kick out wide on the left level with the edge of the box. It's a dangerous position and it's a dangerous ball in - Garner rises high and gets on the end of it but he can only send his header over the bar.

United have a free-kick on the right and Di Maria whips in a teasing ball. Falcao looks like he might get on the end of it but he's not hungry enough to get there. It's a half-hearted attempt to reach the ball and it eludes him and rolls out for a goal kick.
23'
Di Maria picks up the ball deep inside his own half and sets off on a run. For a moment it looks like one supremely talented kid in a playground of average number-makers as he skips past one, two, three. Eventually they catch up with him and despite Rooney being on hand, the run comes to an end.
22'
Fellaini gets bogged down in the Preston corner and the crowd love it when Humphrey gets the better of the Belgian in a feisty tussle.
20'
Chris Humphrey, having had a foray down the wing a couple of moments before, decides he'll go again. He starts off well but overruns it in his excitement and Luke Shaw has enough pace to match him and see the ball out of play.
19'
Di Maria slips a nice ball through to Rooney and United have another corner.
18'
Marouane Fellaini receives a slight elbow to the face and has the nerve to look aggreived. The phrase 'taste of your own medicine' springs to mind.
17'
Davies comes back onto the field after a knock and is sporting a new shirt. Only problem is that this one doesn't have a name or number on the back.
15'
Di Maria takes it and Stuckmann is completely flat footed and breathes a sigh of relief when he sees it sail just wide of his left-hand post.
