Andy Robertson: Scotland captain upset with late collapse against Netherlands - 'We can't keep doing this'

Scotland captain Andy Robertson said that his team "can't keep doing this" after they slipped to a humbling 4-0 defeat at the hands of the Netherlands on Friday night.

The Scots impressed with their performance for the majority of the game but were wasteful in front of goal and were punished by a ruthless Dutch outfit.

Tijjani Reijnders notched a stunning strike to open the scoring just before the break to give the hosts the lead in Amsterdam.

The visitors managed to hold out but suffered a late collapse with Georginio Wijnaldum, Donyell Malen and Wout Weghorst scoring in the space of 13 minutes to complete the rout.

Scotland have now conceded a total of 18 goals in their previous six matches and speaking after the game, Robertson said they need to improve their performances when facing stronger opposition.

"You can't come away to these big teams and play the way we did," he told Viaplay. "We have to take heart from the 60, 70 minutes but the last 20 minutes is not how we want to play.

"The fact that we have walked off that pitch 4-0 is unbelievable. We can't keep doing this, going into our old ways against the big teams. There is no way we can play like that because people will look at that result and think it is very one sided.

"When you go to major tournaments then you have to be a lot better than that. If you do get beat, you have to keep your goal difference down.

"We do not want to be the team that just qualifies for tournaments, we want to be competing. We have to get back to winning ways and it needs to start quickly.

"Today we tried to treat it like a rehearsal for the Euros and for large parts we did well but the game is over 90 minutes.

"We have got the energy, it is not as if we tired, we kept the ball really well and we just switched off. In a game we played well we could have walked off at 6-0."

Scotland and Aston Villa midfielder John McGinn also stressed that the team need to rebuild momentum heading into the finals this summer.

"So much to take from the game but obviously the scoreline is an embarrassing one for us," he said.

"We had good chances and one of them has got to go in. You can say you've had good chances but we've got to be more streetwise and when it goes to 2-0 shut up shop a little bit more.

"We're going to go into a tournament where goal difference matters so much.

"I think over the piece we can take positives in the sense we didn't feel that the Netherlands were a million miles from us, but those moments towards the end of the game are certainly not what we look of with many positives.

"We're on a bad run of results at the moment, it's happened to us too many times and we can't let those bad habits creep back in."

Scotland will have the chance to return to winning ways when they welcome Northern Ireland to Hampton Park on Tuesday night.
