Hello and welcome to Eurosport's live commentary of Athletic Club's clash with Atletico Madrid. My name is Liam Twomey and I'll be taking you through all the action as Diego Simeone's men look to continue their La Liga title challenge at San Mames.

It's full time at San Mames, where Fernando Torres' ninth league goal of the season has ensured that Barcelona and Atletico Madrid can still only be separated at the top of La Liga by goal difference and head-to-head record. The visitors spent virtually the entire match on the back foot but always appeared in control, shutting Athletic down expertly in the final third despite losing Diego Godin to injury early on. Indeed, had Yannick Ferreira Carrasco not wasted two great chances in the final minutes, this typical Diego Simeone performance might have been rewarded with an even more impressive scoreline.

CHANCE: They may not need it but that really should be Atletico's second goal. Torres drives into the penalty area from the right flank and after escaping the attentions of several Athletic defenders, Carrasco blazes a shot over with the goal gaping.

Athletic are bombarding the Atletico penalty area with high balls now and after a couple of clever knockdowns, Raul Garcia can only scuff a shot towards Oblak's goal as he loses balance.

Four minutes of additional time will be played at San Mames.

CHANCE! A hint of danger for Atletico as Raul Garcia meets Lekue's cross from the left with a looping header at the near post, but it's a relatively comfortable catch for Oblak.

Simeone continues to prowl his technical area with pent up anxiety but there appears little reason for him to worry - Atletico have defended this lead brilliantly and limited Athletic to just a couple of half-chances, none of which have seriously tested Oblak.

A break in play that draws whistles from San Mames as Oblak receives treatment for a blow sustained while catching a high ball into his penalty area. Time is running out for the home side, and they know it.

CHANCE! Virtually out of nothing, Atletico create a fantastic chance to put this match beyond Athletic's reach. Carrasco wrong-foots San Jose with his control from a floated Filipe Luis cross, but Iraizoz parries away the Belgian's fierce volley at full stretch.

San Mames grows quiet as Atletico edge forward again and manage to work themselves a period of safe possession. Simeone's men are experts at killing matches from winning positions and the minutes are bleeding away here.

Athletic corners are becoming a regular occurrence now and the latest delivery falls to Benat on the edge of the penalty area, but his low shot can't find its way through a sea of Atletico bodies.

Atletico survive a barrage of corners and Carrasco tries to launch a lightning counterattack, but he is dispossessed by Lekue and Athletic narrowly fail to work a shooting chance on the edge of the visitors' penalty area.

Athletic are building their attacks at greater pace and moments after De Marcos sees his cross from the right cleared, Williams has a shot blocked away for a corner.

Iturraspe swings in a hopeful cross from the right and Raul Garcia claims that his wayward header was deflected over Oblak's crossbar, but a goal kick is awarded.

Final change for Athletic as Inigo Lekue replaces the visibly frustrated Markel Susaeta.

An irate De Marcos protests to the assistant referee after a decision goes against him, and the source of his fury is revealed when replays show that the midfielder went down clutching his face moments earlier, claiming to have been struck by a flailing arm from Filipe Luis.

CHANCE: A moment of confusion in the Athletic defence allows Griezmann to nip onto the ball and race through on Iraizoz's goal, but before the Frenchman can get a shot off he is expertly eased off the ball by Boveda. Calm and crucial defending.

Benat is controlling the middle third of the pitch despite intelligent Atletico pressing, but the playmaker is too often being forced to pass sideways rather than forwards.

Another substitution for Athletic, with Ander Iturraspe introduced in place of Xabier Etxeita.

Keen to break up the waves of Athletic pressure, Atletico edge themselves forward again and some determined play from Carrasco wins another corner, but Koke's delivery is disappointing.

Atletico punt the ball upfield after a loose touch from Williams and Carrasco is a little too eager in his attempts to win the ball from Benat, who is getting increasingly frustrated with the visitors' physical approach.
