Another exceptional display by Real Madrid under Zidane at the Bernabeu. The atmosphere around the club is very different now, and the highlight of tonight's game was the perfect hat-trick from Ronaldo - left foot, right foot and header.

Both Isco and James have been excellent for Real Madrid, putting an end to the argument that the two of them couldn't possibly play in the same team. It has worked tonight!

Bigger tests are yet to come, but Real Madrid seems to be a much happier place now with Zidane at the helm. They seem more comfortable with themselves. Very potent in the final third, great to watch.

YELLOW CARD: Casemiro (Real Madrid)

Ronaldo took a knock in scoring that goal. His diving header took him flying into Arlauskis in the Espanyol goal, but he seems to be fine now and is smiling in celebration.

GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAL! Real Madrid 5 (83 mins - Cristiano Ronaldo) Espanyol 0. Ronaldo has his hat-trick! Jese finds the number seven with a sensational cross to the back post, and he finds the net with a brave diving header.

That was superb play from Perez! He did so well to get past Marcelo and Casemiro at the byline, but he had no help inside the penalty area when he tried to pick out the pass.

ABRAHAM WITH THE DECENT CHANCE! The midfielder ghosted into the penalty area to latch on to the end of a cross from the right side, but his shot is tame and Navas makes the save.

With Atletico Madrid losing to Barcelona at the Camp Nou yesterday this result will draw Real Madrid to within a point of their city rivals. They're still in the title race picture, just.

This second half certainly hasn't been up to the standard of the first for Real Madrid, but Zidane will be pleased if they can see out this match with a clean sheet. That's important.

That was surprising from Ronaldo. He lines up the freekick from a tight angle, but instead of shooting he chips up the cross to the back post. Nobody read it though, and it drifts wide.

Vazquez has come on as Benzema's replacement, and the forward did spend a spell on loan at Espanyol once upon a time. This is his chance to make an impact against his former team.

Benzema has been in exceptional form this year, and so it's exactly surprising that Zidane has decided to take him off and give him a rest. The French striker is so important.
