Real Madrid have come out for the second half with fresh energy, but this is how they started the first half and they were soon pegged back by a resurgent Valencia team.

Benzema chose the wrong option! The French striker could have driven into the penalty area himself, but he decided to pass to Marcelo - who was on his heels and couldn't gather the ball.

The away side have started the second half well, but they still look somewhat shaky at the back. That's strange considering Benitez's reputation as a defensive-minded football coach.

THAT BLOCK WAS NEEDED! Bale gets to the byline and squares for Marcelo, who gets the shot away on goal. But a Valencia defender went to ground to make the block. Not sure who it was, but it was crucial!

The 4-5-1 formation is working rather well for Valencia at the moment. It makes them compact when they are defending, but it shifts into a 4-3-3 when they come forward on the break.

BLASTED OVER! Good freekick opportunity for Real Madrid on the edge of the penalty area, but Bale scoops it well over the target. I think Ronaldo will be taking the next one, Gareth.

Of course, Real Madrid have so much quality throughout their team they could turn the contest at any time. Bale has looked lively, as have Ronaldo and Benzema too. Dangerous for Valencia.

The end of that first half was excellent and has given Valencia momentum heading into the second period. Neville's men seem to have finally clicked into gear. Positive signs for them.

PENALTY KICK TO VALENCIA! Gomes goes down inside the area under the challenge from Pepe, and the referee points to the spot.

Pepe has had to be on top form in the last 10 minutes or so. The Portuguese centre-back has been the one preventing Valencia from finding a way through on goal - and from finding a leveller.

Bale takes the shot early from distance, hoping to catch the goalkeeper off guard at the near post. But the Welshman is made to look rather foolish as his shot is comfortably saved.

This is an excellent spell for the home team. Real Madrid need to regain control of this match. They can't wait for that half-time whistle to come. They need some time to regroup.
