ANOTHER GREAT CHANCE FOR THE HOSTS! This time Abdennour races to reach a loose ball in the penalty area, but Pepe gets there before him to poke behind for a corner kick.

GOMES SHOULD HAVE SCORED! He showed great footwork to make his way through the Real Madrid defence, but Pepe gets across just in time to make the challenge. What a chance!

Real Madrid have been by far the better of the two teams in this first half, but Benitez might be slightly irked that they haven't been able to add to their one goal advantage.

Bale is back on his feet, but Real Madrid want the match officials to keep an eye on the tackles coming in on the Welshman. He does seem to have been on the end of a few dull ones.

The away side are once again unhappy at some of the tackles coming in from Valencia. This time Gomes clashes with Bale, and the Welsh winger has come off the worse of the two.

Both managers are absolutely furious at their teams for that last chance. Neville is raging that Cancelo didn't take the opportunity, whilst Benitez is throwing his arms about in frustration at the defending.

VALENCIA SHOULD BE ON LEVEL TERMS! Cancelo ghosts in between two central defenders, but he can only plant his header wide of the target from about six yards out. What a chance!

ALMOST A REAL MADRID CALAMITY! Navas flaps at a cross, Marcelo's header back to the keeper is poor and Ramos eventually chests the ball into the arms of the Costa Rican.

There's a lot of quality in this Valencia side, but their play in the final third has been really slack. They need to make the most of their opportunities when they get that far up the pitch.

For the first time in a while, Valencia have the chance to knock the ball around the defence and midfield, and regain a little bit of composure. They need a breather.

Ronaldo's first touch has been excellent so far tonight. This time he brings a high ball out of the sky with one touch, but Gomes makes the block to deny his shot on target.

Kovacic has done well to slot into this Real Madrid starting lineup. There's a bit more mobility about their central unit with the Croatian involved. He has been impressive this far.

Valencia are doing their best to hit out on the counter attack, but they can't string together the passes well enough. There is a lack of composure about their play right now.

Ronaldo is doing a lot of running about, but isn't seeing much of the ball to his feet. Bu for the moment he seems quite content with doing the dirty work, chasing down the opposition.

This match feels like something of a tipping point for Benitez. Win this, and you could see Real Madrid building some momentum. Lose it, and he would be lucky to keep his job.

Of course, with Barcelona slipping up against Espanyol yesterday there is a chance for Real Madrid to claw back some of the difference at the top of La Liga. They desperately want three points tonight!
