Real Madrid are now showing more willingess to keep hold of the ball in the centre of the pitch. They know that this would be a big result for them, so there's no need to go gung ho.

The home fans inside the Mestalla are doing their best to ramp up the intensity and tempo of their team's play. They are contesting every decision made by the referee.

BIG CHANCE FOR THE HOSTS! A corner kick is scooped back into the penalty area at the back post, but Kondogabia completely scuffs his effort and the shot doesn't trouble Navas.

This is a little bit better from Valencia, but they are showing a lack of guile in the final third. They need the likes of Parejo to step up and take a grip of the contest. He can unpick things.

Kondogbia has been Valencia's best player so far. He's been the one who has been able to get clos to Kroos and Modric in the centre of the pitch. But he needs help from his teammates.

Marcelino won't be pleased with how his side have played in the opening 30 minutes here. He wants them to plug the gaps, but so far they have stood off Real Madrid on the ball.

That was a relatively simple save for Neto. Kroos picked out Ronaldo with an excellent ball, but the contact from the Portuguese forward wasn't great and the keeper can make the save.

NAVAS MAKES THE SAVE! Kondogbia turns one way, then the other as he looks to create the space for the shot. When he eventually fires at goal from 20 yards, Navas is equal to it.

Casemiro actually started the game poorly, but he is now proving to be the dynamo through which Real Madrid's attacking play is flowing. Modric and Kroos also playing well.

The home fans are starting to take their fustration out on the referee, who they believe is giving Real Madrid more than their fair share of the decisions. I wouldn't say they have a case.

Bale needed to make that defensive header. The Welsh winger was back helping out his teammates at the back and he's the one who makes the clearance to get rid of the danger.

This is much better from Real Madrid this afternoon. That opening goal only seems to have motivated them further. They are in control of the attacking play, making it count.

There was no question about the validity of the penalty kick award in the first place. It was an oafish challenge from Montoya. He gave the referee an easy decision to make.

Ronaldo gets the opening goal from the spot, but the cushion pass from Bale to win the penalty in the first place was key. The two men don't get on, but when they combine they can be devastating.
