Cabaye's free-kick only finds the side-netting and that's the final action of the game. Sunderland have picked up a much-needed win, while Palace's home struggles continue.

McArthur's shot dribbles harmlessly through to the keeper as Palace become increasingly desperate in their attacking efforts. The hosts will kick themselves if they lose this game. It was there for the taking.

But an ankle injury has forced Defoe to leave the field early. The striker is helped off by the physios and on comes Danny Graham.

What a sucker-punch that goal from Defoe was. He's chased down lost causes all evening and took full advantage when the chance to open the scoring presented itself to him.

Pantilimon palms away a terrific shot from Cabaye that was arrowing towards the top corner. Palace can't believe they're behind here, but they haven't look like scoring all game.

GOOOAAALLL!!! A horrible mix-up between Hennessey and Dann sees both end up on the floor as Jermain Defoe slots into an empty net. 1-0 Sunderland. Calamitous.

Van Aanholt shoots over the bar to waste a dangerous opportunity for Sunderland on the counter. All of a sudden the game is opening up. We've only had to wait 76 minutes...

Wickham makes way, replaced by the fit-again Chamakh.

Watmore creates a chance out of nothing, but Jones' shot is sliced horribly wide and Defoe can’t sort his feet out quickly enough to make something of it.

It's all pretty tame still from Palace. Bolasie shoots from range, but it's easy for the keeper.

Half-time sub Sako has picked up a knock and is replaced by Bamford.

Van Aanholt goes into the book for a cynical foul that halts a terrific Zaha run down the wing.

Watmore shows just why fans are getting so excited about his potential with a gorgeous turn and run that wins a free-kick in a shooting position. The wall holds form to block the shot, but at least Sunderland have a spark now.

A Cabaye corner is again poorly dealt with by the Sunderland defence, but Wickham's air-kick sees a chance for a shot go begging.
