The Lucas/Fellaini battle will be a real feature of the afternoon at Anfield. No side is winning the midfield battle so far - they are cancelling each other out.

Darmian does well but plays a short ball towards Rooney when, with a bit more guile and by taking a risk, he could maybe have found Lingard's run.

Rio Ferdinand on Twitter has accused both teams of "booting the ball out of play for fun!"

Manchester United have 56% possession so far, to Liverpool's 44%. Can is looking for a corner down the left, but the United fans in the Anfield Road show their thoughts on that!

This has been very scrappy so far - Can takes the ball down the right from Clyne and then Henderson but the German overruns the ball.

I did half-hear that red card stat. There have been 16 red cards in this fixture in the Premier League era...

Liverpool have a break, with Henderson in space 40 yards from goal, and the Liverpool skipper inexplicably shoots with Clyne well-placed down the right channel.

Another tough challenge from Lucas, this time on Herrera. Clattenburg awards United a free-kick. Will Lucas last the 90 minutes?

Referee Mark Clattenburg has emollient words for the pair of them, and no card produced.

First moment of handbags, as Lucas and Fellaini go head-to-head with the Belgian accusing the Brazilian of going through the back of him. There have been 16 sendings-off in the last 16 meetings between the teams, I just heard. Can that be right?!

United are really playing a route one system to counter Liverpool's high-pressing game. Schneiderlin is the go-to man as United build from the back.

A quick counter from Can, who takes advantage of a Blind error and plays a superb crossfield pass, but Milner is unable to get his shot on target from the right channel

Moreno is across to check a United attack through young down the right.

Lucas flicks the ball to Lallana, who gets between the defenders. De Gea is in no-man-land, but recovers and Firmino is just wide with his follow-up effort.

Fellaini has been clattered by Lucas - he seems to have been caught on the cheekbone by the Brazilian. Lucas smiles - he is OK - but Fellaini takes a moment to regather his senses.

The injured Michael Carrick and Phil Jones are sitting in the away end with the United supporters.

Rooney is dropping back from the striker role, obviously trying to drag Sakho out and create some space for Fellaini and the speed of Martial.

Henderson fouls Martial on the left, but Blind's free-kick is easily cleared by Liverpool. An early opportunity wasted.

Schneiderlin is dropping very deep for United, but Fellaini is getting forward a lot in what looks like a 4-1-4-1 formation,

Liverpool are not letting de Gea settle, with Firmino putting pressure on the United goalkeeper. It is a scrappy start so far.
