Defoe is played in behind, but Lovren is alert to the danger and shows an impressive turn of pace to get back and clear. The centre-back had to deal with Vardy in the week so has had some very useful preparation for the Defoe test.

Some encouragement for Liverpool, who could certainly do with a win after the midweek loss at Leicester:

Henderson slams a cross-field pass out of play and then waves his arms in disgust at Moreno for not keeping it in. Come on Jordan, that one was your fault.

Sunderland have started the brighter of the two sides, but it's been a slow opening to the game - although the extended chat about Sunderland's strip probably gave that away, didn't it?

This Sunderland kit really is a horror-show. Worst kit in the league? Undoubtedly. Worst kit in the history of the Premier League? It's probably not quite that bad...

Liverpool get the game underway, kitted out in their traditional red home kit. Sunderland are in their distasteful green away strip.

A large number of Liverpool fans are protesting about a price hike that was announced by the club earlier this week.

Liverpool: Mignolet; Clyne, Lovren, Sakho, Moreno; Allen, Henderson, Can; Milner, Lallana, Firmino. Subs: Ward, Toure, Benteke, Sturridge, Lucas, Ibe, Flanagan.

Sunderland: Mannone; Jones, van Aanholt, O’Shea, Kone Kirchhoff; Cattermole, M’Vila, Khazri, Watmore; Defoe. Substitutes: Pickford, Brown, Rodwell, N’Doye, Johnson, Toivonen, Yedlin.

Sunderland will line up against the former keeper Simon Mignolet today. The Belgian made 90 league appearances for the Black Cats before his switch to Liverpool, but there will be no warm welcome for the stopper - you imagine he'll be facing quite a lot of 'testers' today given his shaky recent form.

Sturridge is back on the bench for Liverpool after (yet another) injury, joining Ibe and Benteke as attacking sub options. There's no Martin Skrtel for the Reds though, with the centre-back still struggling with an injury.

Before his spot of appendicitis, Klopp was healthy enough to give his thoughts on today's game and the importance of bouncing back from the midweek loss at Leicester:

"We want - and have - to do better than we did [at] Leicester because we were absolutely not satisfied with our performance," said Klopp.

"You have to strike back and that's what we have to do - it's not too important who is the opponent.

"We are at home and we need these points, that's what everybody has to know. Sunderland are maybe better or different than before, but we have to be too."

Liverpool will be without their inspirational manager in the dugout today. It's disappointing not to be able to see him and Allardyce face off, but get well soon Jurgen.
