First Benteke produced a moment of brilliance to give Liverpool a glimmer of hope with a scissor-kick volley, but then the debut boy, Martial, popped up with his own bit of individual brilliance to wrap up the win. It finished Manchester United 3, Liverpool 1.

There will be four minutes of added time, most of which seems likely to be spent with United stroking the ball around in the middle of the park. The home fans are already celebrating.

Liverpool are throwing bodies forward, trying to get a goal back, but this game is over now. Just as the visitors thought they were in with a chance of snatching a draw after Benteke's great goal, it was taken away from them by the United newbie.

The Old Trafford crowd is jubilant after that sensational start to life at Manchester United for Martial. His run was reminiscent of Thierry Henry, which will do nothing to quieten the hype surrounding his record-breaking arrival.

Martial is given a standing ovation after winning a free-kick off Lovren. It's his first meaningful involvement in the game and the United fans are clearly keen to get behind their new star.

Still Liverpool fail to break open United as they strain to get a run at the home defence. Lucas tries to spark them into life, but succeeds only in punting the ball through to Chris Smalling.

Milner is late into a tackle on Young and picks up a booking. The England midfielder remonstrates with the referee, but Oliver didn't have much choice.

Inviting that foul is Ings' final involvement as Rodgers rolls the dice. The summer signing is replaced by Divock Origi.

Darmian hauls down Ings outside the United box and is shown a yellow for his troubles. That was a cynical from the full-back, but he'll be happy enough to have picked up a booking rather than let Ings run into the area.

With the points within reach, Van Gaal makes a change. Carrick's ageing legs are given a rest, with Schneiderlin coming on in his place.

That's how you take a penalty! Ander Herrera dusts himself down and takes the spot-kick himself, hammering it into the roof of the net. 2-0 United.
