Missing some key men in midfield, Liverpool are struggling to keep hold of the ball and once again give it straight back to United. Benteke and Ings are being left isolated up top, which will be frustrating for the two summer signings.

It hasn't been a classic first half, but Van Gaal will be pleased about his team's complete dominance of possession. Chances have been few and far between, but if either team looks like conjuring up a goal then it's United.

Depay is again the man who looks to spark United into life, but his dinked cross into the box bounces off Fellaini. If only the Belgian had a first touch he'd be a great option up top. As it is...

Ings wins the ball inside the United half, but there's not much support up with him and he eventually ends up giving the ball away.

That early atmosphere hasn't lasted, although when Depay gets on the ball he's given the fans something to get excited about. Again he goes on a mazy run down the flank, but it comes to nothing as Clyne shuts him down.

Rodgers is busy pointing, whistling and waving his arms on the touchline, presumably trying to get some clever tactical instructions over to his team.

Firmino hasn't seen much of the ball in the opening half hour, but his few touches have shown glimpses of real quality. Whether he'll live up to that big price-tag remains to be seen, but there's promise there.

It hasn't been the most exciting start to the match, but it does seem to be following the trend in United matches this season: keep possession as much as possible, suck the life out of the opposition (and supporters), then hopefully grab a goal.

Lucas is late into a challenge for the second time in a matter of minutes, but Oliver keeps his cards in his pocket... for now.

Lucas fouls Depay and an ironic cheer reverberates around Old Trafford as the ref whistles for a free-kick. The home fans clearly feel that Liverpool have had an easy ride from Oliver, but at least he's letting the game flow.

Again United swing a cross in towards the head of Fellaini, but Mignolet goes over the top of a crowd of players to punch Blind's cross away.

The decision to leave Morgan Schneiderlin out of the starting line-up raised some eyebrows prior to kick-off. But the Carrick-Schweinsteiger axis has bossed the opening 20 minutes.

Clyne steams on to a loose ball and tries to get a shot away, but he's under pressure from Schweinsteiger and can only dribble an effort harmlessly wide.

De Gea may be disappointed that his move to Real Madrid didn't go through, but he won't mind staying for another season if he has as little to do as he has so far in this game. Surely Liverpool will want to test him out soon and see if the transfer mix-up has had any impact whatsoever on his ability between the sticks.
