Full-time at St Mary's where, despite their best efforts, Southampton have been unable to secure three points against an Aston Villa side that has set a new club record of 14 league games without a win.

Sanchez goes down writhing on the floor claiming he has been caught in the face by Romeu. Replays suggest minimal contact but a few more seconds tick by as the Colombian receives treatment on the pitch.

There will be five additional minutes to be played at St Mary's as Gueye gives another free-kick away in a dangerous position.

Ward-Prowse's inviting corner is headed over by Van Dijk and then Guzan is cautioned for time-wasting as he dithers over a goal kick.

Hutton fouls Juanmi on the left and earns himself a booking. Ward-Prowse's excellent delivery forces Lescott to head the ball out for a corner at full stretch.

Gueye goes down after a couple of crunching collisions in the Southampton half and receives treatment on the pitch.

Southampton build in possession before Romeu drives forward and after the ball ricochets around the edge of the Villa box, the Spaniard shoots wide.

Final change for Southampton as Shane Long is introduced in place of Sadio Mane.

Bertrand fires another low cross in from the left as the match becomes even more stretched, but Okore puts his body in position to make the interception.

CHANCE: Sanchez clips a nothing ball into the Southampton box and Westwood is the only man to react, but the Englishman's left-footed shot is sliced well wide.

Sinclair looks to drive over the halfway line but Romeu checks his progress with a fine tackle.

Second change for Aston Villa as Kieron Richardson comes on for Leandro Bacuna.

Substitution for Aston Villa as a limping Rudy Gestede is replaced by Ashley Westwood.

GOAL! Southampton 1-1 Aston Villa. The hosts are finally level with a goal that almost identically mirrors Villa's opener. Ward-Prowse's corner drifts over everyone to the back post where Romeu manages to wrestle free of Sanchez and poke the ball in.

A smart Veretout ball allows Ayew to run at the Southampton goal with just Van Dijk to beat, but the Dutchman stands tall to make a vital tackle.

CHANCE: A superb pass with the outside of his foot by Davis sets Juanmi running at the Villa defence and the Spaniard's low shot stings the palms of Guzan.

Villa give themselves some respite from waves of Southampton attacks with a spell of solid possession that ends with Veretout miscontrolling the ball.

CHANCE: Cedric picks out Juanmi with a pinpoint cross from the right but the Spaniard can't quite rise high enough to generate a firm contact on the ball.
