Tadic clips another cross in from the left and Bacuna, jostling with Davis at the back post, inexplicably launches his hand towards the ball but narrowly fails to make contact as the ball drifts out of danger.

Villa have lined up with Hutton on the right and Bacuna on the left of a back four that looks very fragile in these opening minutes. Neither have been a factor going forward so far.
7'
CHANCE: Tadic curls Southampton's first corner of the match to the back post where Wanyama, having escaped the attentions of Sanchez, directs a free header wide.
5'
Villa venture forward for the first time and work the ball into Ayew in the left channel, but the Ghanaian is crowded out by Southampton defenders before he can cause any panic.
3'
CHANCE: Southampton attack down the left again and Tadic plays a brilliant low cross that an unmarked Pelle meets and blazes over with Guzan scrambling and the Villa goal at his mercy.
2'
CHANCE: Villa's defence looks very shaky very early and after Mane breezes past Bacuna on the left and pulls the ball back for Tadic, who curls the ball over when it seems easier to hit the target.

Davis and Pelle get us underway at St Mary's and Southampton immediately work the ball around their backline.

The players are out on the pitch at St Mary's and the official formation graphics suggest Alan Hutton will start at left-back. Dusan Tadic, Sadio Mane and Steven Davis will surely fancy their chances down that side. Kick-off is fast approaching...

According to our friends at Infostrada, only York City (14) are on a longer winless run than Aston Villa (13) in the top four tiers of English football.
14:45
Virgil van Dijk has a point to prove and the smart money is on him enjoying a good afternoon against an Aston Villa side that have scored just 12 goals in 14 Premier League games this season.
14:40
Alan Hutton looks PUMPED.

Aston Villa boss Remi Garde: "We are still in a bad position - not a crisis. We know we have to win games and didn't win the last one, we're disappointed because we should have had a better result [against Watford]. The performance of the players pleased me but we made too many mistakes to win."
14:30
Southampton boss Ronald Koeman: "The balance at the moment between attacking and defending is poor, really poor. Maybe we have to change the system, maybe we have to play more defensively. I don't like that, because I'm a manager who likes to go forward, but we will speak about that with the players what's the best to do to prepare ourselves for this Saturday."

Southampton come into this match still licking their wounds following the club's heaviest home defeat for 56 years, a 6-1 mauling at the hands of Jurgen Klopp's resurgent Liverpool. This, however, looks the perfect opportunity for Ronald Koeman's men to get their confidence back.
The Saints smashed Aston Villa by the same scoreline in last season's corresponding fixture, with Sadio Mane netting the fastest hat-trick in Premier League history. Remi Garde's struggling side have lost their last six on the road and are winless in their last 13 league games, leaving them seven points adrift of safety.

The teams are out and Southampton make two changes to the side that was demolished by Liverpool in the League Cup on Wednesday, with Jose Fonte recovering from a badly cut knee and James Ward-Prowse replacing Jordy Clasie in the starting XI. Joleon Lescott captains Aston Villa in the absence of the injured Micah Richards.
Southampton: Stekelenburg; Cedric, Fonte, Van Dijk, Bertrand; Wanyama, Ward-Prowse; Davis, Mane, Tadic; Pelle.
Subs: Davis, Clasie, Long, Romeu, Martina, Juanmi, Caulker.
Aston Villa: Guzan; Hutton, Okore, Lescott, Bacuna; Veretout, Sanchez, Gueye; Ayew, Gestede, Sinclair.
Subs: Ilori, Agbonlahor, Westwood, Richardson, Traore, Gil, Bunn.
