Was that Gomes save from Mane the best of the season so far? It's certainly in with a shout and overall the Brazilian has been outstanding in his time at Watford. The odd gaffe is what gets the headlines and gives him such a poor reputation, but on his day there are few who are better.

A block by Targett breaks kindly for Long to have a shot from a narrow angle, but he tries to lob Gomes and the Brazilian claws it away to safety.

A weak punch by Gomes (typical after his heroics just moments earlier) tees up Targett for a shot from range, but his swerving effort slides narrowly wide.

What a save by Gomes! Southampton break at pace and Mane skips into a shooting position on the edge of the box, only to be denied by the fingertips of a full-stretch Gomes arm. Sensational stuff from the stopper.

Watford have gone up a gear since conceding and are straight on the front foot looking for an equaliser.

That was a peach of a cross by Targett for the goal, putting it on a plate for Long.

GOOOAAALLL!!! Shane Long puts Southampton 1-0 up, glancing a Targett cross behind Gomes and into the far corner. That was far too easy for the Saints and Watford's coaching staff will be furious! Advantage Saints. 1-0.

A Watford attack breaks down and Forster clears long up-field.

Neither side have managed to work a chance yet, but the quality in the final third is there and the signs are good that we'll have a decent game tonight.

Gomes comes steaming off his line as Mane always bundles his way on to the end of a through-ball from Long.

Have to agree with that sentiment on the return of Forster. Southampton have really struggled without him between the sticks and he's developing into a really solid keeper.

Capoue shows remarkable composure to turn away from trouble and distribute on the edge of his own box. The central midfielder has been a towering presence for Watford since his move from Spurs, displaying all of the qualities that had persuaded the north London club to splash out on him with part of their Gareth Bale money a few years back. It might not have worked out for the Frenchman at White Hart Lane, but he's fitting in nicely at the Hornets.

There's an extremely high tempo to the game, with both sets of players still trying to warm up in the freezing conditions. There's no way they can keep this up, but it's creating space on the counter at both ends.

Long brings a lofted cross down tidily inside the box, but he's crowded out and Watford break.

Watford have started the game well, stroking the ball around at the back and denying Southampton any early possession. However, the Saints' high press has also denied any service in to Deeney and Ighano so far.
