We are off at the Stadium of Light. The Black Cats are in their usual red and white stripes playing left to right, with Arsenal in a navy blue kit, with luminous yellow stripes.

John O'Shea makes his 350th Premier League start today, but Sunderland fans should look away now at this stat. Sunderland have never won a Premier League match that Jack Rodwell has started - he makes his 33rd Black Cats' start today.

"They are good on set-pieces with [Wahbi] Khazri, and they have [Lamine] Kone and [John] O’Shea who are dangerous on set-pieces as well," the Frenchman said. "They are a team who are in a bad position at the moment, but it’s early in the season. It’s very tight at the top and very tight at the bottom as well, so there are no differences made anywhere."

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger says the Sunderland danger man is Jermain Defoe, but warned his defenders about the threat the Black Cats pose from free-kicks and corners.

Arsenal are unbeaten in their last 13 matches and have won eight of their last nine games in all competitions. Sunderland, by contrast, have lost six out of their last seven league matches.

Sunderland have won just one of the last 25 league matches between the two sides, a 1-0 win in November 2009, but held the Gunners to a goalless draw in last season's corresponding fixture in April.

"It will be very difficult to have a really open game with them,” the Scotsman said. "Their level of player is on a greater level than ours.We have to respect that but I would like to try and have a game but I know that would be difficult. Arsenal away from home are very good and we need to watch their speed too, we have to be mindful of what we have defensively."

For Arsenal, Aaron Ramsey returns to the bench after recovering from a hamstring injury, but there is no place for Santi Cazorla, who has an Achilles injury.. Arsenal forward Lucas Perez has been ruled out for up to two months with an ankle problem sustained in the midweek EFL Cup win over Reading, while Granit Xhaka is serving the final match of his three-game suspension.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has made two changes to the side that started last Saturday's goalless draw with Middlesbrough at the Emirates Stadium. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain comes in for the hamstrung Theo Walcott, with Kieran Gibbs making his first Premier League start since March as he replaces Nacho Monreal (muscle problem) at full back.

Sunderland boss David Moyes has made one change to the side that started last Saturday's 1-0 defeat to West Ham at the London Stadium, with Billy Jones coming in for Javier Manquillo at right-back.
